ODDFELLOWSHJP. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Pioneer Juvenile Lodge aiwl Pride of Kaitangata Lodge was held on Thursday last. X.G. Bro. There passed away at his residence, jterrv .Street, Kaitangata, on Thursday evening last, one of Otago's pioneer settlers, in the person of Mr John Welsh. The funeral, which took place un Saturday to the Northern 'Cemetery, was largely attended by the old settlers of Kaitangata and surrouuding districts, Rev. R. M. G. 'McDowell officiating at the house and graveside. The late Mr Welsh was born at Westeriirooniehouse, 'County of Haddington, Scotland, on April 6, 1840. He arrived at Port Chalmers in the ship "Robert Henderson" on September 3, 1860, with his sister ('Mrs D. Mitchell, now of Wnngaloa). He took part in the gold digging rushes of Lindos and Gabriel's (iullv, and along with Mr Robert Grijior did surveying work oil the Peninsula (Otago), afterwards working with the late Mr William Aitchison (known as the .Laird), and the late Mr John Darling (Inchclutha), Kemra Ba'nk farm. While in this district he marTied the eldest daughter of the late Mr John barling, and took up a farm at Gleiioinaru. It was while at Glenomaru that lie along with others founded the Loyal Alerandra Lodge, M.U.1.0.0.F., in lstill. He came to reside at Kaitangata 47 years ago and proved a most worthy and estimable citizen, taking part in anything for the welfare of the town; was a member of the (School Committee, Trustee of the Athenaeum, clerk of the Town Board. For 40 years he was a 'member of the Presbyterian Church, having filled all the offices, being at the time of his decease Elder and Trustee of the Church and Hall. He was also the Elder appointed to repiesent the church on the Presbytery. He was one of Kaitangata's niost respected citizens and particularly in church matters were his counsels and advice sought after. He leaves behind to mourn his death the widow, two sons and two daughters—(Messrs John Welsh, Ravensbo.ane; Robert 1). Welsh", Kaitangata; Mrs C. T. Bisset, Kaitangata, and Mrs Joseph Kirl.iy, Owaka. Besides the members of the family, there arc 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A strange coincidence was that a greatgrandson died just a few hours later than he did. Mr Welsh was visiting Iris son on the Monday, and he died as stated on the Thursday, his death coming as a surprise to all. Heartfelt sympathy goes out to the widow and family in their sudden bereavement.

SHOOTING. The Kaitangata Defence Hide Club fired off their final shoot for the Carson (.'up mi Saturday afttrnoon, when •Messrs M* Carson and P. Barclay tied for lirst plate with a total of 96. The total scores in the competition for the cup place Mr .T. Coulter winner with a total of 480, with .Air F. Carson as " runner-up with 475. In Saturday's match 'Messrs W. D. (.'arson, -T. Rutherford, Geo. Wilson, V. Matched and D. Middlemass did not shoot. The range prizes for the final day of the "('arson Cup" resulted in a series of tie> on Saturday, which will necessitate their being fired off again on Saturday. For the 300 yds prize (limit Ml nine tied, 300 yds (limit 34) seven tied, while nine also tied for the 600 yds prize (limit 32).
