SLIGHT BRITISH ADVANCE. LONDON, May 10. Field-Marshal Sir Douglas Haig reports: We advanced our line slightly this morning on the southern bank of the Scarpe. The enemy at noon renewed his attacks on our position on the Hindenhurg line- eastward of Bullecourt, but was completely repulsed. Further counter-attacks during the night near Fresiioy were equally unsuccessful. There was severe air lighting on Wednesday. Eleven German machines were brought down. Five of ours are missing.' GERMAN NIGHT ATTACKS. REPULSED BY THE BRITISH. LONDON, May 11. Sir Douglas Haig reports as follows: The Germans attacked last evening eastward of Arleux and southward of the Bouchez River. They were repulsed in each case by our artillery and ma-chine-gun fire. Wo also drove off a later attempt, wherein the Germans were assisted Tby tlammenwerfer, southward of the Souchez River. We successfully raided the enemy trenches in the course of the night eastward of Ypres. During the night there was considerable mutual artillery action at a number of points on the battle front.

THE FRENCH FRONT. SUCCESSFUL LOCAL OPERATIONS. LONDON, May 11. A French communique states: There has been steady cannonading northeast of Soissous and in the Chemin des Daraes. By local operations we carried a system of trenches north of Saucy. Fresh enemy attempts to expel us from the trenches we captured at Chevreux on April 18 were shattered by our barrage and machine guns. We progressed north-west of Prosues. ENEMY ATTACKS REPULSED. LIVELY ARTILLERY DUEL. LONDON, May 11. The French communique states: — ■ We-carried a centre of resistance in the region of Chevreux and German grenade counter-attacks broke down under our fire. We repulsed a strong attack on the salient to the north-east of the Californian Plateau, after lively fighting, wherein the enemy suffered serious lossei. A lively artillery duel is proceeding on the Cerny-Hurtebise front.
