PERSONAL.
Mr D. Kirby, late editor of the Clutfta Leader, paid a short visit to Balclutha on Friday. Mr Kirby has quite recovered from his. recent illness. Mrs W. Maker has received further j cabled advice stating that her son, Private Thos. Maker, is. in the 2nd London I General Hospital suffering from shell jvounds in the shoulder and chest. He Is progressing very satisfactorily. The name of Second-Lieutenant .P. J. Ramsay appears in the list of officers allocated to the 20th Reinforcements. He will be attached to D 'Company, In the latest casualty list appears the name of Private John Allan, of Greenfield, as having been slightly wounded but remaining with unit. Private Allan is a son of Mr' James Allan, of Greenfield.
Mr M. Hitehou (Milton) received the following message on Saturday from the 2nd London General Hospital: "Your son, Rifleman Herbert Waiwera Hitchon, wounded in the arm; progressing favourably." Private E. C. Hill, reported wounded in France, was born at Woodhough, Dune din, and is the youngest of Mrs E. Hill, Kaitangata. He. enlisted at Oamaru with the Sixth Reinforcements.
Constable Almond (in charge of the local police station) has received cabled advice that his brother, Trooper J. Almond, who was recently wounded in France, is suffering from contusion of the back, but is progressing favourably towards recovery.
Long-service medals are to be presented to Lieutenant M. T. Jackman, of Romahapa, Quartermaster-sergeant A. W. Smaill and Sergeant-major E. H. Bum, of this district, by the Defence Department. The medals will be presented at a formal parade to be held at Balclutha shortly. Lieutenant Jackman was an officer in the Clutha Mounted Rifles prior to the inception of the Territorial system.of training, and was one of the members of the original force! Sergeant-major Burn and QiM.-Sergeant Smaill were also attached to the Clutha Mounted Rifles.
Constable Hay ward, from the Timaru police force, has been appointed in charge of the Owaka police station, vice Constable Richardson, who recently retiree!. Constable 'Haywarcl commenced his new duties about three weeks ago.
The funeral of the late Mr William Mclntyre, which was held on Sunday afternoon, was very largely attended, the remains being followed to the graveside bj r aboijt 800 mourners, including over 100 members of the Oddfellows' Lodge, M.U.,1.0.0.F., members of which acted as pall-bearers to their late brother. Every portion of the district was represented, and several were present from as far away as Dunediu to pay their last respects to the dead. P.P.'G-.M. Bro. C. J. Wood read the Oddfellows' burial service at the grave, and Rev. B. J. James conducted the funeral services at the deceased gentleman's late residence in John Street and at the, graveside. A large number of floral tributes wiere placed on the grave.
