THE BOY SCOUTS.

(By Scoutmaster.) | The -Balelutha troop of the Boy Scouts assembled at St. Mark's Hall on Wednesday evening (May 17) at 7 o'clock. The attendance was good, some 011 boys being present. At 7.15 p.m. the troop marched to the Oddfellows' Hall, where a rehearsal for to-morrow night's was held. Demonstrations of signalling, bridge building, mattress weaving, hut building and first aid will be given by the boys, and judging from their keenness the display will be well worth witnessing. At a meeting of the Dominion Executive of the Boy Scouts held 011 May. 13, the Commissioner reported 011 his visit through the South Island. He stated that lie was particularly impressed with the Balelutha troop, which he designated as the best troop in New Zealand. Hewas also favourably impressed with the troops at Dunedin. It was decided that the Bristol Piano Company's shield for signalling should be awarded to the Balelutha No. 1 team. The examiner, Caprain Barclay, commented on the excellent nature of the work of this troop. 'Major Sandle, R.N.Z.A., Boy Scout Commissioner for Otago, accompanied by District Commander 'Holderness, of Dunedin, will be present to-morrow night. They will inspect the troop in St. Mark's Hall at 7 p.m., and from there the troop, headed by the Balelutha Brass Band, will march to the Oddfellows' Hall. The Clinton troop assembled last Tuesday evening, under the command of Scoutmaster Garden, During the evening the boys were instructed in second•■lass badge work. Great enthusiasm was shown, and it is hoped that quite it number of members will have qualified for this badge within the next two mouthsv The following boys have been appointed noncommissioned Officers:—E* Ward anil C. Ross> to leaders; C\ Newson and R. Gordon, to corporals. AbOlit 12 members of the troop intend journeying to Balelutha on Eirtpire night to witness that troop's demonstration.
