FBOM OSE OWN CCSBIHSFONDENT. HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. The 13th annual general meeting of members of the Kaitaugata Horticultural Society was held in the Church Hall on Friday evening, when the attendance though small was representative of the most "successful growers and supporters of horticulture iu the town. Mr James Sharman occupied the chair. The annual report fully covered the work carried on by the society throughout the year. The books show that there is a good membership. Three successful shows had been held, the entries iu each show were numerous, but on account of various causes the financial position of | the society was somewhat weaker than at the end of the previous year. This position would have been considerably worse but for the fact that during the year the committee cut down the working expenses by about £2O. The balancesheet showed receipts amounting to £46 Us 61d. Included in this amount were: Donations £l2 -Is, door-takings £ll, entry fees £•''. 7s, members' fees £ll 5s 6d, vegetable sales £.'! KSs ,'id, refreshments £2 19s !>d, interest and hire of vases 6s, and a credit balance of £1 4s llld. The chief items of expenditure were: Prizes £:i() 2s, printing £5 6s Id, rent £M 15s 6d, judging £2 8s 2d. Incidental expenses were kept down to a very small amount. A balance of Pis JOld still stands to the credit of the society. Mr Shaniian, in moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, referred to main points mentioned in the report, and complimented the society upon the good work carried on throughout the vear. —Mr .1. Special votes of thanks ivere accorded the retiring committee and the actingsecretary ('Mrs 1. W, Brown). It was agreed to hold three shows during the present year, viz., spring, rose and autumn shows. OBITUARY. MRS SI'S AN SHORE. After a long and painful illness, extending over four years, Mrs Susan N'iblock Shore, wife of Mr Thomas Shore, manager of the Taratu mine, passed away on Friday morning. The deceased lady was a native of Scotland, having been born at Dumbarton 67 years ago. She left that country <ls years ago in company with her husband for Otago. Although of a retiring disposition, the late Mrs Shore was well known ami respected iu the chief coalmining centres of Otago, more particularly at Green Island, Fairfield, Kaitangata, Shag Point, Orepuki, Hokonui and Taratu. While not taking an active interest in outside affairs, the deceased kept herself well posted in all matters which would be deserving of assistance, and her assistance was of a practical nature which brought comfort into many a stricken home. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon and was attended by a large number of old friends, among whom were many very oltl identities of this town. The service at the graveside was conducted by Rev. McDowal]. Among the wreaths placed upon the grave was one from the employees of the Taratu mine. The deceased lady is survived by her husband and two sons, Alexander, residing at Auckland, and Maxwell, Taratu. Of several grandchildren one, Miss Susan Johnstone, resided with her grandparents from her early childhood and proved herself of true sterling worth in her attention to her ailing grandparent up till the time of the latter's death. KAITANGATA BRASS BAND. A general meeting of bandsmen Was held in the Anglican hall on Friday evening to arrange affairs in connection with the band. Since the movement to reconstruct the band was successfully carried through very satisfactory progress from a musical point of view has resulted. Mr W. G. McDougall (bandmaster pro tem) occupied the chair, and explained that the meetiug was to ar-' range for the affairs of the band being put on a proper footing, for although " at present members were displaying a ' keen interest in band affairs, uo definite rules and regulations were iu vogue.
