THE SPONSOR OF ANZAC.
Lieutenant-Colonel Nash, M.L.C. Writ-us to the 'Sydney Sun': The letter in your issuo of t.lio 10th iust. from Sapper W. J. F. Davidson contains the most reasonable explanation for the assembling into a single word l of the five letters. Someone (who?) no doubt used the noun, with "landing" after it. The appropriateness of Anzac lan'ding was apparent, and the name was sanctioned by general use at once. The final letter will oftx'n give cause for thought to philologists and lexicographers. Should it be Corps or Cove? If the former, it requires a word attached; if the latter, it can stand alone, indicating the crescentic recess in the sea shore where the men landed the boats. Anzac country—the country of the Anzacs. So called because on April 25, 1915, A.D., an army corps composed of Australian and: New Zealand soldiers, landed on that part of the Gallipoli Peninsula and fought the Turks there.
