VALEDICTORY.

PRESENTATION TO MR JAMES ROBERTSON AT LAWRENCE. On Friday evening there was a very representative gathering of town and country residents iu the Borough Council chambers, Laurence, the occasion being a farewell presentation to Mr .lames Robertson, who, after over half a cen-tin-v- spent in the Tuapeka district, is r oviug with his family to Kaka point, in the Clutha district. The actingMayor (Councillor B. \V. Winn) occupied the chair, and the other members of the council occupied their usual places at the table. The chairman, after eulogistic reference to Mr Robertson's valuable services to the town as Mayor, his capable ami tactful conduct of the council's proceedings, and his invariable impartiality, asked his acceptance of a puiM' of sovereigns as a slight mark of the respect and appreciation in which he wa-i held by the peoplo of Lawrence and the surrounding districts. The recipient was assured that the purse carried with it the best wishes of the donors for Mr urn! Mrs Robertson and family in their future home. Councillors Leary, Simpsou, I'Mie and Christie endorsed the chairman's remarks, expressed regret at the loss of Mr Robertson to the town and district, and wished him and Mrs Robertson every happiuess in the future, Mr Thomas Davidson (Waitahuna West) expressed the regret of the country settlers at the removal of Mr Robertson from the district, and Messrs Sinclair and Stenhoiise spoke in commendatory terms of Mr Robertson's social qualities. Mr Robertson (who was visibly affected In- the proceedings) returned thanks for the handsome gift, with which his wife would procure a souvenir of their long connection with the district, and for the appreciative remarks with which il had been accompanied. They would ever cherish kindly-feelings towards the Tuapeka district, and when they were settled in their new home would be pleased to give visitors from that district a right royal welcome. Recitations were given during the proceedings, which were of an enthusiastic nature, ami terminated with the singing of the National Anthem.
