Loud bursts of laughter, which struck some of the audience as familiar echoes of the past, broke out during the performance, and the audience eventually took them for its keynote. The laugh was so unrestrained that even the comedian was infected by its effusiveness, and stopped to speak to the culprit. He remarked, "It wadna be a bad investment for me to engage ye to gang on tour wi' me; yer reel doon ricbt laughter is sic a great eneourager to an artist and an audience; I'll come doon and ye by the hand." When the singer went to the stalls the laughmaker arose, and the audience recognised Sir Alexander Peacock (Minister for Education), and his own outbursts were overwhelmed by the crowd's.
