NEW ZEALAND TO HULL.
IMPORTANT EXPERIMENT IN THE SHIPPING INDUSTRY. (London Standard.) An experiment which, if successful, will mean a large development in the importation .of New-Zealand produce and fruit to the North of England, it k announced, will be tried by the adoption of a temporary monthly service of steamships between Hull and New Zealand. In July Mr Thomas Mackenzie, High Commissioner for New' Zealand, visited Hull, and since his return to London he has persistently urged; on his Government to make use of Hull as a distributing centre for New Zealand produce instead of using London solely. Two of the leading shipping companies in New Zealand decided to try the experiment, and the first steamer will leave New Zealand in April. She is owned by the New Zealand Steam Shipping Company, Limited, and this vessel will be followed in May by another vessel owned by the Shaw, Savill and Albion Line, Limited. The vessels at the outset call first at London before going to Hull, but if the scheme is attended with success this will be departed from as the matter develops. An important factor is that the two companies have agreed that the freight rates to and from Hull shall be the same as the rates to and from London, and this will reduce .substantially the through rates from New Zealand, to the northern towns of England. " Already the companies have ob''tained assurance of a good deal of new ! tO'iinage as cargo.
