BIBLE LESSON CLASSES.

The clergymen conducting weekly Bible lessons in the Balclutha District High School made a forward movement this year by holding a meeting of the children, with their parents and friends. The meeting was held on Thursday evening in St. Mark's Hall, and proved a great success. The rector (Mr W. W. Turner, 8.A.,) presided, and with him on the platform were the Revs. Currie, Greenslade and Stubbs. Mr Turner, in opening proceedings, referred to the self'-deuying labours of the visiting clergymen and to the good work he believed they were doing; and afterwards at different stages of the programme short addresses were given by the clergymen present, Mr Stubbs speaking on the Bible in schools, Mr Currie on the Bible as literature, and Mr Greenslade on the Bible as life. The greater part of the programme, however, was in the hands of the children themselves, a number giving pieces of recitation and others musical items. Mrs Grigor ami Mr Keid presided at the piano. An action piece by a number of boys was exceedingly well done. Two •examinations were held during the year, and Messrs Stubbs, Greenslade and Currie gave out the prizes. The following is the prize-list:—For the first half-year: Standards 111. and IV Maidie Grigor, Margaret McKenzie, Lena Macfarlane and George Mitchell; Standards V. and Vl.—Angus McKenzie, Cora Stenhouso, Isabel Sutherland and May Bishop; Secondary Department—Grace Macfarlane, Mavis Malcolm, Margaret Johnston and Vera Harrison. For the second half-year: Standards 111. and JV.—Jean Noble, Maidie Grigor, Annie Johnston ami Pearl Gillespie; Standards V. and Vl.—Lilian Waymouth, Cora Stenhouse, Isabella Sutherland, Ruth Hull and Nellie Batchclor.

A collection was takcu up to defray expenses.
