LONDON, Jun« 7. Lord Roberts presided at th« Pilgrims' Club's welcome to th» new American Ambassador. Sir B. Grey (Foreign Minister), in proposing Mr Page's health, said that if America submitted peace proposals making "conflicts between nations more remote Britain would respond. America was fortunately placed in being able to take the initiative, because she was beyond the reach of menace and aggression. Mr Page in reply said that the time had long passed when they needed to indulge in makeshifts in intercourse. The two great English-speaking nations could speak together frankly to those haviug much land and small habit of the sea. The British Empire was an unfathomable wonder till one reflected that it was not built by standing on this small island, but by standing astride the seven seas.
THE CRYSTAL PALACE. LONDON, June 7. The looal authorities of South London guaranteed half the amount necessary to acquire the Crystal Palace. The Lord Mayor has opened a fund to secure the balance, and Lord Strathcon a (Canadian High Commissioner) offered Jho final £IO,OOO.
THE FEDERAL ELECTIONS. STATE OF PARTIES. SYDNEY, June 7. Tho latest figures have not altered the position in regard to the Federal elections. The Labor majorities at Ball a rat and Illawarra are now 162 and 164 respectively. The result at Illawarra cannot be affected. The "Noes" have crept further ahead on the referenda issues. It seems finally assured that the position will be:— HOUSE. Liberals 58 Labor 37 SENATE. Liberals 6or 7 Labor 30 or 29
