NEW ZEALAND AND THE NAVY.

AUCKLAND, June 4. When the Sydney 'Daily Telegraph's' cabled comments upon New Zealand and the Navy were brought under Hon. .Tames Allen s notice to-day, the Minister for Defence said that the Ward Government had never advanced a separate nuiti policy, but had always cugfested that a direct contribution should e made to the Imperial Qovernment, to be expended as the British Admiralty thought fit. Such a policy, Mr Allen eaid, wa« a very different thing from a separate unit policy. He could no: understand the 'Telegraph's' reference to a mosquito fleet. As understood by the present ..Government, it was a fleet of submarines, a torpedo-beat, and destroyers adapted for tha defence of the coasts and harbors of Gre*t Britain.
