One of the best of the stories relabel by Bishop Wood at the Aielanesian missionary meeting at Chnstchurch the other night concerned a certain island in his d.ocese. In _ this island, he said, when two of his, white missionaries landed there, they were besieged by native women, who wished to marry them. I'heir refusal greatly surprised the natives, untii.;the missionaries dipomaticallv stated that they were tapu—that [ -'-v were reserved for white women, .aid so they were let off. But a native teacher, who 'arrived earlier, was not so fortunate 1 . A feminine inhabitant of the island asked him to marry her. and on his refusing, she declared she would kill herself. But b° said he did not mind. (Laughter.) However, the position increased "a "favity wiven the members of the tribe informed him that according to the etiquette of the tr be, a woman rejected must kill herself. But as he was a stranger and a teacher, they would not kill him, but would put him in<a canoe with three cocoa-nuts, ?nd push him, out to sea. "Of course," said his Lordship, "such a course could have had but one ending, and so the teacher married the lady. This has seriously affected the work on the island, and I can assure you that when the lady visited our ship 1 found she was. a regular demon, even making the best allowances." (Laughter.)
