KAITANGATA NEWS.
♦— (from Our Own Correspondent.) GENERAL. - The water ia being taken out of the shaft at Taratu preparatory to the resumption of work therein. ■' On Monday afternoon Mr William McGhie r who was engaged repairing some broken timber in the Kaitangata mine, was struck by a piece of falling stone, wbitih broke his left arm at the wrist. Mr McGhie had the arm examined through the X-rays at the Dunedin Hospital, the result of the examination at time of whtiug not being known, as the staff was too busy to send the photographs home with him on Wednesday night.
Messrs J. Wyllie and D. Hay, who are building a new boat for pleasure on the river, expect to have her ready for a trial spin at. Easter time. The hull, which is of steel plates, and capable of carrying 10 tons, is nearing completion, and the owners expect to have her launched shortly, when the motor will bujnstalled.
The latest Otago Education BoaTd examination results state that Misses Frances Houston and Reba Espie, former pupils and pupil teachers of the Kaitangata school, have passed "D," while Miss Smith, pupil teacher, and Rhoda Blackie, of Standard VII., have secured partial "D."
The band rotunda bazaar affairs are beginning to take proper shape. The lady canvassers have been appointed. The men's committee meets on Monday evening, when the outlying districts will be arranged for. The brass and pipe bands are expected to be .present on Monday evening at the committee meeting. The Church of Christ mission is responsible for I!" converts. SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The. monthly meeting of the above was held ou Taesday evening, the 25th inst., when there were present Messrs T. Middlemass, ,1. Cockburn, H. C. Sea-
man, W. Nicholas, A. Bissett, D. P. Clements and J. C. Shore. In the absence, of Dr Fitzgerald, Mr Cockburn was voted to the chair.
The minutes of the previous meeting were adopted as read on the motion of Mr Mitkllemass, seconded by Mr Seaman.
Headmaster's Report.—The following report was presented and received, on the motion of Mr Middlemass, seconded by Mr Nicholas: —The school re-opened with an attendance of 012, reaching the maximum 342 the following week; 37 pupils were admitted and o2 were withdrawn, leaving a roll number of 064. On account of sickness the quarterly average is only :>2o. The banner was won once each by Standards J., IV. and V. At present the infants are being taught in the gymnasium, and the work fs going on well, the only trouble being ventilation on hot days. Miss Smith, pupil teacher, who is leaving at the end of the week, has proved a real live teacher. Two pupils (Rhoda Blackie and William Nicholas) have been appointed to the positions of probationer and pupil teacher respectively. MiNicholas passed the junior Civil Service examination, Rolfe Latimer won a junior scholarship, and Annie Houston passed the junior free place examination. Miss Elder, is at present acting as relieving teacher.
CORRESPONDENCE. From the Otago Education Board stating that the board's subsidy of £37 12s 6d was granted and would be paid about the 21st inst.—Received. From the Otago Education Board stating that the above amount had been paid into the bank.—Received. From the Otago Education Board stating that £o 12s had been paid into the bank for conveyance of children.— Received.
From Miss J. Robertson returning thanks to the committee for its letter of appreciation for her work whilst a teacher in the school.—Received:
From Miss McDougall resigning' her position as first junior assistant in the school, as she had been promoted to fourth assistant.—Received. GENERAL. The secretary was instructed to write to Miss Smith thanking her for the good work she had done in the school during the time she has been teaching. The Easter and Anniversary holidays were fixed as under:—Thursday, Friday and Monday, March 20, 21 and 24, to be Sehool holidays. - The Works Committee reported re progress of new class room and other works about the school. Mr Jas. Cockbum was appointed to rfgn cheques in place of Dr Fitzgerald (resigned). The committee then dealt with applications for the position of second assistant in the school. Ten applications were put in, and of these David John Albert Lyttle was recommended to the Otago Education Board for appointment. An account from Mr A. Reid for £] 8s (id was passed for payment.
