KAITANGATA NEWS.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) I GENERAL. After being a patient, since the ChristjuAb holidays, in the Dunedin Hospital, little Robert Hector, sou of Mr James Hsitor, of Kaitangata, has had to suffer th* removal of the eye that was injured as; a result of his playing with a toy spring pistol. As previously reported, the. little fellow used a wire nail for a projectile, and had the misfortune to shopt himself in the eye. All efforts to save the eye have proved futile, and to save the sight of the remaining optic the injured one has been removed. The raw recruits among the Territorials were on Tuesday last instructed - in. the art. of shooting at a target at a distance of 25 yards, and some of them hit it. Others seemed to try the experiment of planting a crop of bullets in the immediate front of the target. Several, again, really tried hard to hit the mark with both eyes tightly closed. Truly the drill instructors belonging to our Defence force have something ahead of them to bring out the finished article. However, what has been done in the past can again be accomplished.

Up to the present no active move has been made by those who object to the change of the weekly half-holiday, aud it appears that our local shop assistants are yet to have the opportunity of enjoying their half-holiday along with the great majority of others who have for j bo long been able to participate in the several branches of sport indulged in by local enthusiasts. The shop assistants are now looking forward with pleasure to the fast approaching football season. The third round of prize-firing in the Kaitangata Defence Club's competition will take place to-morrow at the Centre- •» wood range. A meeting of the congregation of the Presbyterian church was held on Monday evening to consider the call to Mangere received by the Rev. W. Currie. . Mr Currie placed himself in the hands 01 his congregation, who in turn decided to let the matter rest entirely with the rev. gentleman himself. BAND ROTUNDA. A meeting of those interested in the erection of a band rotunda was held in the Council Chambers on Wednesday evening, when representatives of the brass and pipe bands attended with councillors to discuss ways and means for the erection of a rotunda. This matter was brought up some time ago, but as the holidays almost immediately followed the meeting it was decided to wait until later on before any active steps were taken in the matter. The Mayor (Mr W. Coulter), who occupied the chair, called for suggestions from those present toward getting the scheme into operation. Mr Carson asked what amount would be required to erect the rotunda, aud also how much money was already in hand. The cost was estimated at from £9O to £IOO. The sum of £ls 5s was already in haud as a result of donations from Robertson's Pictures and others. The Mayor coiisfdered that a bazaar would easily bring in the balance required. Councillor Gage supported this idea, and moved that the necessary steps be taken to hold a bazaar for raising funds to erect a band rotunda. Bandsman Win. McLaren seconded the motion, which on being put to the meeting was carried unanimously. It was agreed to hold the bazaar about the beginning of April. Councillor ./as, Donaldson moved that all present at the meeting form themselves into a working committee, with power to add to their number. Seconded by Bandsman J. McCaw and carried. The Mayor was appointed chairman, and Messrs J. C. Shore and Piper F. Carson joint secretaries.

Councillor Donaldson moved that a meeting of ladies be called for Thursday evening, February 20, at 7 o'clock in the Council Chambers. Carried. Councillor Donaldson was deputed to interview Mr Stevenson, of Stevenson's Pictures, to arrange for the hall, and also request the co-operation of the picture show in the scheme. The committee will be present to meet the ladies in the Council Chambers on Thursday evening. A vote of thanks to the chair closed the meeting. RIFLE-SHOOTING. A match was fired on the Dunedin Club's range on Saturday between teams from the Dunedin Defence Rifle Club and Kaitangata Defence Rifle Club. The match resulted in a win for the Dunedin Club by 12 points. The conditions were 10 shots and one sighter at 500 and 600 yards. Rifleman Geo. Anderson made a 10shot possible at 500 yards.
