THE NEW COURTHOUSE

HELD OVER FOR BRICK BUILDING. The following correspondence regarding the proposed new courthouse for Balclutha speaks for itself. It will be remembered that this paper raised the question in an article a few weeks ago, and we are now pleased to see that the Department is likely to take a commonsense view of the matter. In reply to Mr Malcolm's telegram previously published, he received the following from Hon. W. Fraser:—"lf courthouse is to be built in brick or concrete the cost will largely exceed the £7OO authorised by Parliament. Do the Mayor and townspeople generally suggest that the whole matter should be hung up for the present?" In reply the Mayor (Mr Stewart) wired Hon. W. Fraser:—"General desire that courthouse be in brick or concrete. Prefer wait another year." The Mayor received the following:— ■'Tenders for courthouse have been ro--cived, but in deference to your strongly expressed desire will decline all of them and wait for another year."
