FAREWELL SOCIAL AT PUKEPITO.
A most interesting function was held in Begg Bros.' bam, Pukeawa, on .Friday evening last in the form of a fare- , well social given by the residents of tlie disfcritt and the Pukepito Social and Dramatic Club to Mr and Mrs J. R. Leask, who in consequence of Mr Leask having bought out Mr D. Munro's smithy at Lovells Flat are leaving) ( for that neighbourhood very shortly, Their many friends rolled up gallantly, although the roads were none too good j for pedestrians, and the districts round about were very well represented indeed. All joined in wishing Mr and Mrs Leask the very test of prospects in their future welfare.' They were made the recipients of a very handsome testimonial in the form of a cheque. , Mr Chas. A. Wrigley, in making the presentation, said thati they had all assembled there that evening to appreci- , ate in some form or other the kind and valued services of Mr and Mrs Leask in many and various ways for the benefit of the district in general. He was sure no persons were more deserving, and the residents had done what little they could to show their appi'ec-' iation of the services of Mr and Mrs , Leask during their sojourn in that district. The speaker hoped that they may be crowned with success in their new surroundings. Continuing, he ■ said that Mr Leask was wellknown, as he had acted as honorary secretary for the Pukepito school committee, and held a similar position for the Social and Dramatie Club, as well as being the local correspondent for the various papers in circulation throughout the district, and on behalf of the resident's and the Pukepito Social and Dramatic Club he had much pleasure in calling upon Mr Leask to accept this testimonial as a token of their esteem, i Mr Leask, in responding, thanked Mr I Wrigley for his gratifying remarks and also the residents for their highi\ i teemed testimonial and said that what little he had done for the district was done with good feeling on his part. On behalf of Mrs Leask and himself, he gave one and all a hearty invitation to Lovells Flat. Mr Leasl> with feeling, said that he was unaware that they had such good friends in the district, but as the best of friends must part, they did so with a feeling of regret. The company, with great gusto, joined in singing ''For he's a jolly good , fellow." j The ladies wore thanked very heartily by Mr "Wrigley for providing such a splendid repast which was heartily I partaken of by all. Songs were renI dered by Messrs A. Carruthers, J. , Shin, W. Randall, J. Isbister, the ! gems of the evening being sung by Mr • Isbister. Recitations were given by Messrs T. Gordon and F. Jones in a very able manner. Dancing was also indulged in till about 3 a.m., the music being supplied by Messrs D. Lyon and A. Douglas, "extras" being contributed by A. Carruthers and A.' Thompson. The musicians are to be complemented on their achievement. Mr Geo. Curtis ably officiated as M.C. and kept things going merrily. Everyone enjoyed themselves thoroughly and the evening's function came to a close with the best of wishes being bestow- j ed on Mr and Mrs Leask, and the com-1 pany joining hands and singing "Auld 1 Lang Syne?'
