SHORTCOMINGS OF NO-LICENSE.
♦ PROHIBITION PARTY'S MISTAKK. A discussion on the subject of Nolicense took place at a sitting of the Waikato Archidiaconal Conference, held at Cambridge and presided over by Archdeason Willis. The Rev. («. AY. Smailes, of Wailii, said, although a strenuous advocate of No-license for many years past, he was now 'conscious of a growing feeling that as a remedial measure No-license was inadequate. The shortcomings of No-license seemed to be the ease with which liquor was imported into no-license areas. He was fast drifting to the impression that the only safe thing to do was to go for straight-out Prohibition. The Temperance Party made a tremendous mistake in not accepting the famous "clause 9" offered by the late Mr Seddon—no license, no liquor. Its acceptance might ere now have ended the whole business. Rev. E. S. Wayne (Te Kuiti) admitted that in many respects local option was a failure. He was entirely in favor of Prohibition. The chairman said he was opposed to Dominion Prohibition in thinking it better to accomplish the end in view by degrees. He was also opposed to the bare majority. Rev. H. A: Hawkins (superintendent of the Maori mission) quoted the .small percentage of cures made at Pakatoa Island, and used this as favoring prevention as against cure. The logical and sane policy seemed to be Dominion Prohibition. Several others spoke briefly, including Mr Brooks for the laity, after which a private vote of both orders was taken.
