BALCLUTHA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The adjourned meeting of the above was held in the Council Chambers on Thursday night. . Present His Worship the Mayor (Mr E. .J. Boyd), Crs Poulter, Wilkins, Smith, Clark, Bragg, and Redding. r ihe Mayor reported that he had spoken to the nightsoil contractor who said he would be willing to resume the contract at an increase of £l2'.—Cr Clark moved that the contractor be offered the extra £l2.—Seconded by Cr Bragg and carried. Cr. Clark moved that live dozen galvanised closet pans, 1 Sin guagc, be procured by Crs Redding, Clark and Bragg—Seconded by Cr Bragg and carried. On the motion of Cr. Smith, seconded by Cr. Redding, it was resolved that a telephone be installed in the Council Chambers. It was reported that new steps had been er* cted at the .sale yards. Pig pens were much required, also additional sheep pens near the site of the present convenience—The yards committee to inspect and report to a meeting on October 7 th. Cr. Smith moved that a portion of the reserve he fenced in for dry cows.— Left with reserves committee. The Mayor was appointed to see Mr Harrison and arrange with him to act as ranger, at a salary of £1 per month. Fire Brigade matters were brought up.—The Mayor moved that the captain be asked to call a meeting of the brigade, and that the secretary be instructed to bring his books and show a financial statement of the brigade.Seconded by Cr. Poulter and carried. The clerk was instructed to notify the owner of the shop occupied by Ritchie Bros, to put in an iron crossing. It was mentioned that the present crossing was in a disgraceful state. Cr. Wilkins referred to the state of the north approach to the bridge.— Resolved that the County Council be written to asking it to get that portion of the approach metalled and put in proper order. The Mayor reported that he had spoken to Mr Dunne, and he objected to remove the gate on Jetty street, leading from Charlotte street. The Borough Solicitor would enquire at the Deeds Office, Dunedin, as to the legal position. Cr. Bragg moved, and Cr. Clark seconded, that the engineer be instructed to draw up specifications in accordance, with altered plan of Rosebank road. —The Mayor said that the grade was 1 in 15, but it was proposed to lower a portion of the road at the top o! the hill, making the grade easier.
