WAIWERA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The Waiwera Benedicts are giving a ball this (Friday) evening, winch according to accounts promises to be a great success ihis is to be followed a fortnight later by the Hockey Club's concert and dance. There is to be a great influx of outside talent on the programme, aud the coucert should be well worth patronising. Skating hus been carried on hero during the winter months, Friday nights, and has provided a little amusement for the young people. The young lady hockey players arc still practising away, and hope to make a good showing du the matches' next year. There are several promising players, who, with jti Httlc coach* ing should prove strong players. Tennis is being talked of now and it is intended to see what can be done in organising a club during the incoming summer. There are clubs at Chilton, Balclutha, Reomoana, and Owaka, and if one were formed here it would provide an interchange of matches. Tennis is an interesting outdoor amusement and recreation, for which there is a lack here for both young and old. Fanning work is generally well ahead. Like most other places in the south we have had verv little rain and the ground i s dry." The winter was yery open and feed for stock has stood out well.

A good deal of interest is being taken here in technical education, and there is plenty of scope for classes in various subjects. The thanks of the community are due to those who have tried to interest country residents in this matter, and endeavour to place within their reach the means of technical and manual instruction, the most, if not all, the benefits of which have gone to larger centres, have gone to the larger centers. The school committee held a meeting on Saturday evening, at which Messrs J. Cawley (chairman), J. A. Anderson (secretary), W. Puterson, W. Turner, and J. Bower were present. After the usual business, letters were received from Mr Richardson (chief inspector) and Mr Ward (secretary of (lliiiton School Committee), in connection with technical classes. It was decided to discuss this matter at the Mutual Improvement iSociety's meeting on Thursday evening, and Mr Cawley was deputed to explain the matter to those present. Mr Appleby has had notices put up locally and Taumata and Kaihiku have been notified. Classes for dressmaking and wool-sorting are finding a good deal of favour, and other subjects suggested are English, Arithmetic, Bookkeeping, Typewriting, Shorthand, Veterinary and Cookery. There is little doubt several classes could be formed here.
