KAITANGATA.

There was a fairly large attendance at the Presbyterian Hall on Tuesday evening at social gathering to bid farewell to Mr C. E. Yates, ex-Mayor of Kaitangata. Mr W. Dutiean (the Mayor) presided. A programme of songs, recitations, etc., was given by Mrs Lawrence, Messrs \\. Smaill, W. Duncan, G. Aitchison, and a reading by Dr Fitzgerald. The orfchestra played two pieces. Speeches were given by Rev. AV. T. Currie, Dr. Fitzgerald, Rev. Mr Woodhouse, Mr A. Weston and Mr D. P. Clements. The Mayor, on behalf of the citizens, presented Mr Yates with a handsome rolltop desk, suitably inscribed, and_. a gold watch for Mrs ;Yatcs (who was unavoidably absent through indisposition). The' Mayor in making the presentation said he hoped Mr Yates would cherish the articles as mementoes of the esteem in which ho was .held by - the Kaitangata people. Mr lYates suitably replied. Refreshments were handed round, and a very sociable evening was spent. Mr J. Binney, evangelist of Church of Christ, from Melbourne, started a week's mission here on Sunday evening the the Church in Wyre street, the building being crowded to the doors. The speaker gave a very earnest and impressive address on the human family and God the Father. The attendance throughout the week was also very good.
