A BRITISH AUSTRALIA.
CAREERS FOR CASUALS. Mr Herbert E. Easton, of Sydney, honorary secretary of the British Immigration League of Australia, who recently arrived in London, gavo an address on tjio aims of "tho league at u hincheon at De Keyset's Hotel on Juno 13. "My mission to this country," he faid, "is not to deplete your rural population. The thoroughly skilled agriculturist is an attractive settler all over the world, and not least in the United Kingdom, where there are none too many of him. We in Australia know lull well that the land is the Empire's backbone. Prom it came the men whose lives so freely given have made this Empire what it is. "My mission is to relieve you of your young casual city workers—there is no scarcity of this class here, and if wo in Australia can turn them to good effect the gain will be twofold. If they are allowed to grow up merely to loaf or roam about in your cities, it is open to question if they will add much in their present surroundings to the birth-rate —at all events of a healthy population. "Our Empire as it stands is absolutely dependent upon our retaining our sea .supremacy. To ensure this the Navy must be strengthened. Will it be much encouragement for your Chancellor of tho Exchequer to ask for increased naval votes to strengthen a Navy required to ensure the safety of oversea dominions if they are to be filled with a foreign population?"
