Heavy storms and floods are reported in various parts of England. Thousands of acres are inundated. Hastings, Cowes, Hfracombe, and other towns are Hooded. In ail the classes but one at the Balclutha District High School, the girls beat the boys at prize-winning. In the fifth only did the boys come out on top. In most schools there are more girls than boys. Mr McLean deliver a Christmas address to the children of Poi* Molyneux Sabbath School at 10 a.m. (the usual hour of meeting) on Sabbath (Christmas) morning. The Methodist Bible Class hold a sale of work in the Harvey Hall this afternoon and evening. The proceeds go towards the New Guinea Mission. Admission in the afternoon is free, and) by silver coin in the evening, when a musical programme and supper is provided.

The Kahuika contingent of the Clutha Mounted Rifles, some 10 strong, have just put in a two days' camp &t Papatowai, under Sergt. Burn. They did a good deal of signalling and field-tiring, though the rain interfered somewhat with the latter. Capt. Grigor paid a visit of inspection, riding 40 miles there and 40 back.

Mr H. Benny, of Clydevale, took with him to Christchurch yesterday a sheaf of very line perennial ryegrass, grown on his farm at the former place. The grass, which is exceedingly well-headed, is nearly 3ft high, clean and true--to tyj)e. Mr Benny has 20 acres of similar quality, which he intends to cut for seed. He is taking the sample to Christchurch to let his friends there see what can be grown on £5 an acre land in the south. There was a large congregation at the Presbyterian Church on Sunday morning last, but in the evening a downpour of rain came on just before church time, and the attendance was not much more than half what it would otherwise have been. The Rev. Professor Dickie, of Knox College, preached at both services, and delivered deep and earnest sermons, full of well thought-out matter, commanding the close attention of his hearers. His sermons did not occupy more than 20 minutes, and there were many who were sorry when 'the end came. It was Professor Dickie's first visit to Balclutha, and there are many who hope to sec and hear him again soon. At the evening service Mr O'Connor sang "There is a green hill." A special collection taken up in aid of" the organ fund realised the substantial sum of £ls, which, but for the wet night, would no dount have been increased by £5 or £lO.
