Clutha and Matau A. & P. Society.

FORTY-THlltD -ANNUAL SHOW

McGillivray and Geo. Patrick; hon. veterinary surgeon: Mr J. Banskin, M.R.C.V.S. ; - secretary : Mr T. McDonald ; treasurN er: Mr G. H. Waymouth ; > auditor : Mr John Gow ; Ground Stewards : ' Messrs Wm. McGillivary and Geo. Patrick.

General Committee : Messrs A. Houliston, H. H. Clarke, Simon Wright, John Wilson, R. Houliston, Jas Tnomson, T. Gilmour, D. Murray, W. G, Scott, S. W. Moffat, Joseph Smith, J.C. Anderson, Walter Murray, W. J. Keys, John Begg, jun., Wm. Marshall, D. Sheddan, W. Dalgleish, H. T. Stodart, Geo. Gillespie, uimn Smith. Committee of Management: Messrs John Begg, Adam ±untitston, \>m. Marshall, D. Sheddan, H. H. Clarke, D. Murray, Walter Murray.

The Clutha and Matau A. and P. Society has every reason' to be satisfied with the success of its 43rd annual show, which took place on the Society's show ground, Clutha Park, on Friday. The weather, which has not treated the Society kindly iii| recent years, was altogether favourable on Friday, not a scorching summer's day by any means, for a cloudy haziness shaded, the sun and cooleci the atmosphere; the attendance was> good, the entries a record, and the management and general arrangements without iault. These are the factors essential to the success of the show, and these were in existence in every particular. The show day is the gala day of the Clutha, the one day of the year when everyone—men and women, old and young—feel the call Cluthawards. It is a call that cannot be resisted. It is born of time and usage, and to disobey it is like to feeling forlorn.and lost. Old friends meet, and new friends are made, and so it goes on in the cycle of years, nowhere perhaps more exemplified than at the Clutha show. The events of the past year are discussed, notes compared and experiences exchanged. A Clutha Show crowd is always a happy, well-doing-looking crowd. The gathering is not electrified, or subdued more probably, by the arrival of the inordinately, wealthy in their motor cars and car-< riages with imposing displays. It is a gathering of moderately circumstanced people, representative of the bone and sinew of the land—the backbone of the country—who find pleasure in the just rewards of a hard year's work. They are hard-workers for the most part, and they are enjoying the fruits of their energy. The scene as the people gathered on the terrace, or liued the judging rings, or strolled round the grounds, demonstrated a picture creditable to any community. The ladies were attirwi in the newest gowns and the latest creations of the milliner's art, and_ added a touch of gaiety and colour to the scene, it has been said on previous occasions that the men and women of the younger generation will prove worthy successors of tne pioneers whose places they will in due course fill. One notices, indeed, that the new is already filling the places _of the old. The familiar faces of a few years ago are becoming fewer and fewer, and new names and| new personalities are stepping into the vacant places. The round of time brings its changes, and with it all the Clutha Show goes on progressing and improving, and, still, the yearly meeting place of the countryside. The afternoon passed pleasantly and successfully. There was not an idle moment, and by 6 o'clock the day's work was at an end. THE ATTENDANCE.

Judged by the takings at the gate, which is the only key to an estimate, the attendance would be somewhere about 3,500. Some recognised judges of crowds put it at more than this. The gate takings amounted to £94 13/, and represent nearly 2000 adult admissions ; members' tickets about 600. Persons in charge of exhibits, and allowing for children, will bring' the numbers to somewhere about the %ures we have mentioned. Large crowds drove in from the surrounding districts, while the trains from North and South brought large numbers, and many visitors were present from tore, the Taieri, and other outside distr cts, Milton sending a fair quota, liie numbers from Catlins were not so large as we have seen in past years, many of the people there being apparently contented to visit their local show. The following table gives the gate money for the past seven years Year. £ s . d. 1903 91 8 6 1904 93 7 0 1905 95 15 6 1906 87 13 6 1907 100 15 9 1908 'JO 5 6 1909 94 13 0 Ihc biggest gale the Society had was In J9o], when it amounted to £lO2 odd. THE ENTRIES. , IHe entries were easily a record, be"1? nearly 100 more than last year, and also considerably in . excess of any previous year. The increase was| ciiiclly in sheep and dairy produce, tattle and light horses were also good sections, but draughts were weak m numbers. The following shows -the) ®ntries for the past five years :

had won honours at other District shows, fand also at Metropolitan exhibitions. Even where competition) was lacking the quality of the animals forward was unquestionable. Those forward had no need to feaii competition, and this in some cases had the effect of keeping others back.; We pass now to a brief comment of the various sections.

Cattle; In the Ayshire section, Mr Thos. Barr, of Owaka, was the chief exhibitor. Hi? cattle wore in fair condition, and in point of merit quite tin to the average at district shows. Mr Barr has the makings of a fine herd, and with a little attention need not be afraid to meet good competition. The only other exhibitors were Mr A. H. Anderson and Messrs Barr and Duley. There were some very fine animals in the Shorthorn ring, Mr D. Murray and Mr J. S. Fleming (Clarksvillej taking the bulk of the prizes and dividing the champions. Crossbred cattle ' were a strong section, and some very fine dairy cows were brought forward by Messrs Geo. Anderson, A. Stevenson, G, T. Dent, J. C. Anderson, W. Smith, and others. In fact, this was ' one of the most- attractive rings in the cattle sections. Draught Horses. This section was not by any ; means 90 good as one had a right to expect from a line agricultural district. Thcro was no fault to find with the animals forward, but the lack of competition was disappointing. Evidently the farmers are devoting the bulk of their attention to dairying, wool, and the fat stock market. There were only two stallions in the aged ring, Mr Murray's Blair Athol and Colonial King. They were followed by several meagre rings of colts. ' There were four ontries for brood mare, but only one came foruar.i, Ah- lwing's 'Belle' who was placed at both the Taieri and Dunedin as a two year old and has had a very successful career. Her foal at foot was by Mr luurray's Colonial King, and she was accorded the Champion card for the best mare or filly. The three year old fillies were a fair ring, the Calder La'ds catching the eye. In the two year olds a nice filly, the property of Mi' Murray, by Baron Fyvie, and a Shepherd Lad mare, was awarded 1 the red ticket. The yearlings were a better ring. The first prize went to an Abbot and the second and third' to Cal* der lads, and a pair by the latter sire took first in the class for to year old colt or fillies. Mr Ix-ving's Baron Clinton who took first honours in the 3 year old class was adjudged the best Clydesdale animal on the ground, and also the best entire. The prize for most points went to Mr Murray.

Light Horses,

There was only one class for thorough brcds, and there were only two entries. Hackneys were well represented, the harness and saddle horses being very fair. The weight carriers and colts brought some fair animals into the ring, l but we have the nverage standard generally much higher. The harness horses also brought good rings but outside the prize-takers there was nothing very special. Sheep.''

There was an improving entry in sheep us a whole. The judges in their expressions of opinion said it was a good class all round, the Homneys and Leicesters expecially. They particularly mentioned that the sheep were shown in their natural condition, and there \va9 no artificial making up for show purposes. In the Romneys the competition was very keen, and it was very hard to decide, especially in the ewe classes. The Southdowns were only fair. The 15order Leicester ram was fit for any show. The fats and cross-breds were exceptionally good. There was no entries in Merinos. In Leicesters the exhibitors were Messrs D. Murray, J. C. Anderson, Chas. Shand, John Murray, and Jno. Lockhart (Milton). Romneys were strong, the exhibitors being Messrs W, Marshall, 1). Murray, S. \V. Moffat, A. H. Moffat and Jas. Lockhart, G. Moffat, A. Houliston. Mr Murray took two champion cards and the prize for most Mr I). Morgan divided honours with Mr Murray in the Downs but they were the only exhibitors. Corriedales were left to Mr Murray with two exhibits from Mr Marshall but in cross-breds there was fair competition, the prizes going to Messrs Geo. Moffat, A. H. Maffat, Jno. Tough, S. W. Moffat and J. K. Russel. In fat sheep tli£ chief prizes went to A. 11. and S. W. MolVnt and John Tough. In the pen of fiye fat 2-tooths one exhibit was disqualified for being shown in the wool. Dogs and Swine.

There was sixteen entries in the three classes of dogs, the best competition' being in rough-coated collie, in which there were nine entries. There were seven entries in four classes of swine. Dairy Produce. There was splendid competition right through in this section. The quality bore favourable comparison with former shows, and much of the butter was of superior quality. Some exhibits were, however, very faulty in colour and texture. There were twenty entry's in 21bs fresh butter, and the first prize went to Mrs King, of ■GreonJield, with a very nice sweet quality butter. Mrs W. Ross was second, Miss Davis third and Mrs Sarginson fourth. In the fresh butter a week old, Mrs Sarginson was Ist and Mrs Lawrence 2, Mrsi Taylor 3, and Mrs Jas. Willocks fourth. The quality was good and many of the exhibits of even merit. The separator butter was fair. There were 15 entries and the best was quite up to the mark, though there were several faulty exhibits. The powdered butter was all pretty good, and so was the 2lbs separator, or not separator. There was only six entries in salt butter, Mrs Lawrence getting first prize. Fancy butter only brought one entry. Mrs Sarginson was the largest prize-later in butter. There were no cheeses. Tne hams were fair. The baking was very good, some exhibits being excellent. Mrs F. Ludlow got first lor oat cakes, Mrs Peattie for both oven and girdle scones, while Mrs Bennet, of Rock and Pillar, was awarded first prize ior home made loaf. Booths and Stands.

The booths and stands brought in a revenue of £0.4 13/. There was a circus tent, a merry-go-round and a haunted swing, besides several other, ftU <?t which &ppßat«j| tq

'do business. In Addition to the exibits mentioned under Section Q. the Loan Co. and A. and T. Burt exhibited churns and separators, the Singer and the Standard Ma'cliine Cos. Nad sewing machines?, Ninnno and Blair manures, etc. and Marshall & Summers had a cycle stand, and Mr Thomson had on exhibition cuttl& and' horse medicine outfits while Messrs 1/unino and Redding had an exhibit of traps.
