CLINTON NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent,) The new Inspector of Rabbits and Noxious Weeds, Mr Alex. Clapcott, who is to have Clutha, Bruce, Tapanjii, and Lawrence districts under his control, arrived "in Clinton oi\ Fnuay last to take up his duties. Mr Clapcott is supposed to be stationed lit.i, ,/>it is unable to secure a house of any kiiid, so that it is just possible he may make some other-of the places mentioned his hjtaclquartcrs. The new Vicar of the Anglican Church would also willingly take up his abode in Clinton if a suitable house were procurable. Dr Rosa Collier was also very disappointed to find that there was no house for her.

Reverting to the entire absence of untenanted houses of any size, it seems a pity that the progress and; development of Clinton should be retarded owing to a dearth of houses, preventing people from settling iii| this town.

Much regret was telt here on Monday last upon receipt of the sad news of Mrs Mark Vial's death. Mr Vial; was stationed in Clinton for some! years, where both he and his" lata wife have many friends and relations. Much sympathy is felt here for the husband and family, also for the relations.

At the meeting of delegates from the* various schools held hi Warepa on Saturday last, to make arrangements' for a combined schools excursion,James Youngson was present as a delegate from the Clinton branch ot the Farmers' TJniou. It was agreed to co-operate with that body in, carrying the excursion .to a successful issue, and the date lixod is the -lth of February, There is a good deal of sickness about this district at present, - and there appears to be some sort of eye epidemic that takes the form of an inllammation, with a slight dischargeof matter.

Mr Alex. Douglas, lam pleased to observe, has resumed his duties in the Bank of N.Z. here, after an absence of some weeks on sick leave.

The Clinton Tenuis Club, also the Bowling Club, opened the season on Wednesday, afternoon. The weather was all that could be desired, consequently there was a fairly largo gathering, the ladies providing refreshments, and altogether a very enjoyable afternoon was spent by those present.

SCHOOL COMMITTEE. 1 There was a full attendance of members of the Clinton School Committee on Tuesday last. The Chairman reported that Mr Beattio had been appointed secretary in connection with the combined schools excursion. Mr Beattie reported the result of the conference of school committees, held at Waiepa on the 13th—viz., that Feb. 4th was the date fixed for the excursion, and ltivcrton had been decided upon as the destination ; also that Messrs Hay, Moloney, and Harris of this committee, had been requested to act with himself in making the necessary arrangements with the I railway. Alter much discussion as to whether or not an excursion "to I Kiverton was not too far, it was de- | cided to leave the matter in the ! hands of Messrs Moloney, Harris, and Hay, to make enquiries and advise Mr Beattie later. The Chairman reported that Mr Richard Irving, juii., had that day very generously offered to provide ali the Clinton school children with frpe passes into the Gore Show.—Moved by Mr Moloney, and Seconded by Mr Martin—''That MrIrving's offer bo accepted, and the committee's appreciation of his action be expressed.'' The Inspectors' report was read, and the Chairman moved that the committee's satisfaction with the same be recorded.—Seconded by Mr Hay, and carried. It was agreed that the Free Press bo paid the 7/6 claimed for concert bills when copy of the same is produced. Accounts passed for payment were Mrs Williams £4 2/G, W. Mitchell -1/G, N.Z. Typewriter 2/2, Free Press Co. 8/(3. Jt was decided to refund to •Mrs Williams tiie sum paid by her for emptying the ash-tank. Next meeting was lixed for Tuesday evening, .Nov. cSiuTr, at 7.30 p.m. The secretary was directed to make arrangements re coal, also to report the removal or theft of the large tray from the school to the police..
