CLINTON.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The Clinton Lawn Tennis Club lias spent fully £7O on their court lately. The work has been in the hands of Mr Woodleigh, of Invercargill, who took up all the old asphalt and replaced it with new. The officers of the club are highly pleased with the manner in which he has carried out his work, and hope to open the seaspn on the 9th of November, the same day as the Bowling Club commences play on, its green, which is just adjoining. The prospect of a week's encampment in January is causing a renewed interest to be taken in Volunteering matters. The liiile Club's prize has just been shot for, resulting in Private Jos. Tuinbull. of the Popotunoa corps, being the winner. The company is half-way through the shooting competition for the Brown Cup, 16 men having turned out to compete last Saturday. Speaking to Mr Richard Irving, jun., a few days ago, I learned that he has decided that the Clydesdale stallion "lioseden" will travel the, Waiwera, Ashley Downs, Pomahaka, Wairuna, Waipahi, and Clinton districts this season. "Barron Clinton" will stand in Clinton. "Royal Derby" goes to Crooksrton, Tapanui, and surrounding districts, while "Silver Crest" will travel Pine Bush and[ Wyridham. The Clinton Town Board has leased the lower portion of the Domain below the Recreation Ground to Mr E. McElrov, for four years, at, I tinderstand, £4 per annum upon conditions that the noxious weeds growing on it ; are eradicated.

Owing to the violent nature of the weather on Friday evening, the 22nd inst., the concert in aid of the Waiwera Pubfic Library had to be postponed, as the performers from' here would not venture out. The concert) now takes place on Friday, Nov. sth, when it is to be hoped the weather will be more favourable. Already preparations are being made for the! annual break-up concert to be held; in connection with the Clinton' School in December.

A garden fete was held in the Presbyterian Church grounds on Wednesday afternoon, for the purpose of raising funds to renovate the buildings. The weather was all thatl could be desired, consequently there was a large gathering of people from near and far, and I understand the financial result was satisfactory. There was no sitting of the Magistrate's Court here on Friday last;, there being no cases set down for hearing.
