SERIOUS ACCIDENT TO A HILLEND FARMER.

♦ —. —. Mr Chas. Shund, of Hillend, met with a very misty accident at Hillend on Wednesday afternoon, resulting in the breaking ol both his legs above the ankle. He and his son Willio had crone down in a spring-cart for some things he had bought at Alex. Murray's sale the day before. He was returning with this piled up in the cart, his son sitting behind, when he met someone on th? road who warned him of a traction-engine that was on the road. Mr Shand whipped the horse up, and the animal made a jerk, which over-balanced Mi Shund, who fell to the ground, the wheel passing over both his legs, and breaking them. The horse set off, and Willie, after finding what was the matter with his father, set off, oaught the horse, and unyoking him, got on his back and rode to telephone for the doctor. Here another accident happened, the horse came down, with the result that Willie Shand also had the misfortune to have a small bone in his leg broken. However, he managed to get to the telephone, and Dr Stenhouse arrived in due course. He found Mr Shand's legs both badly broken, and recommended his removal to Dunedin Hospital. The son's accident, however, is only a very slight one. Mr Shand was brought down to Balelutha last night, and proceeded to Dunedin Hospital by the 5 o'clock express.
