CLUTHA HACK RACES.

;■ v - Delightful summer weaker prevailed for the Clutha Hack Racing Club's Meeting, on the Reserve, Balclutha, on Friday. There was a good number of country people in owing to the stock v sale», and these with.tne townspeople made up a -very satisfactory crowd, ( and the result was that £25 14/ was taken at the gate as against £2l 13/6 last year, constituting a record. It Was one of the most successful meetings the Club has yet held. Arrangements were first-class for the day's sport, and the officials one and all, spared nothing to give satisfaction, accordingly they deserve much praise for their efforts. The handicapping judging," and starting were well up to the mark and the events went off up to fairly good time. With hardly an exception the races furnished keen finishes, and there were no accidents to mar the enjoyment of the afternoon. The Maiden Plate went, to jiepnyr after a keen go with Banße.nd, while Silver Star carried off both Cup, and Flying Handicap, and the Shorts went to Mangonel. The 1J mile trot was a soft thing for the scratch horse . an old time favourite in, Mr Hay's Premier, ably ridden by 'Teddy McKewan. The mile trot ended in General Doubt finishingin the lead, with Premier a few leJfcs behind. There were the usual nifflber of cash fielders, all doing good business. The following are the results, with a description of the races : MAIDEN PLATE, Of 8 sovs. Second horse to receive 2 sovs from stake. About six furlongs. Mr J. Morris's Zephyr, Cyrs, 9st 61b (Beale) 1 Mr J'. Landers Bankend, aged, 9st (Ceo. Clark) 2 Mr E. Dabinett's Euby King, aged, 9st (Bromjey) 3 Also atarted-Bellina (9.12), Toko Rose (9.8), Black and Gold (9.6), Miss Sndie (9.6), Silent Watch (9.5), Isla (9.3). , After considerable delay, partly through Zephyr bolting to the showring, ail got away well. Bellina led for quarter way, and then Bankend took up the running till half round. Zephyr came up with a good spurt and raced neck and neck along the straight, gaining the verdict by a head after un exciting go, with Bankend second. A protest by the owner of the second horse that Zephyr had not been three months in the district was not upheld. Time, lmin 22 2-sth sees.

CLUTHA CUP.

Of 13 sovs. Second horse 2 sovs from stake. About 1 mile. Mr H. McTntyre's Silver Star, 6yrs, 9st 81b, (Townley). 1 Mr J. Morris's Zephyr, 6yrs, 9st 51b ' (Beale) 2 Mr A. Twaddle's Pea Jacket, 6yrs, 9st slb (Kirk) 3 Also ran—Crossguard (11.0), Bellina (9.10). Silver Star got a leading position, and held it right round, though Zephyr came up well near home and was only beaten by a neck, with Pea Jacket a length behind. Time, lmin 51 4-sth sees.

MILE AND A-HALF TROT, Of 12 so vs. Second horse 2 sovs from stake. Mr W. Hay's Premier, aged, scr, (E. McEwan) 1 Mr G. Johnstone's Mechanic, aged, 24secs (Owner) 2 Mr W. Rae's Fleet, aged, 30secs (Owner) 3 Also started—Trugela (24secs), Hobart (30secs), Toko (30secs), Laure! (30secs), Bcllemar (33secs), Shop Girl (33secs), Brown Bonnet (33secs), Bon Accord (33secs), Peggy Tracey (33 sees). Premier got off the marki at a good pace, and, going steadily all the way, passed horse after horse ■'till he came to Mechanic. The latter held on to him for nearly a round, and then at the straight Premier gained and finished amid cheers two lengths ahead. Time, 4min 30secs. FLYING HANDICAP, Of II sovs. Second horse 2 sovs from stake. About "six furlongs. Mr H. Mclntyre's Silver Star, 6yrs, 10st 01b (Townley) 1 Mr G. Heurvs Mangonel, 4yrs, 11.0 * (Bromley) 2 Mr J. Morris's Zephyr, 6yrs, 9.6 , (Beale) 3 Also started -Ladysmith (9.0), Silver Cross (11.6). After some delay the horses got away together, Silver Star at once getting into the lead, with Silver Cross second. Half-way round Zephyr got into second place, and nearer home Mangonel came up splendidly and shook up Silver Star for first place, fighting out a great finish, the latter only getting past the post a head in the lead. Time lmin 23 2-sth sees.

ONE MILE TROT. Of 11 sovs. Second horse 2 sovs from stake. Mr P. Clcnt's General Doubt, aged, 15 sees (Owner) 1 Mr W. Hay's Premier, aged, scr (McEwan) 2 Mr G. Johnstone's Mechanic, aged, 17 sees (Owner) 3 Also started Bellrattle (lOsecs), Tarata (15secs), Trugclla (17secs), Hobart (20secs), Laurel (20secs), Fleet (20secs), Onlooker (22secs), Bellemar (22sees), Shop Girl (22secs), Bon Accord (22sr;cs), Lady Wilson (22secs). General Doubt forged to the lead, and at the back of the course Mechanic was second. Premier, going well again, got into second place at the straight, and finished two lengths behind General Doubt, after a game effort. Time 3min 1 2-sth sees. SHOETS HANDICAP. Of 10 sovs. Second horse 2 sovs

from stake. About 4 furlongs. Mr G. Henry's Mangonel. 4yrs, list 21b (Beale) 1 Mr T. Hanlv's Miss Sadie, aged 9.8 .'. (Owner) 2 Mr D. • Sco'tt's Black and Gold, aged, 9.8 (Donovan) 3 Also started—Silver Cross (11.8), and lsla (9.0). Mangonel led all the way, and finally wound up the winner by a length from Misa Sadie. Time, 54 l-sth sees. Isla was left at the post.

FAREWELL HANDICAP. Of 6 sovs. Second horse 1 sov from stake. . About six furlongs. Mr J. Landels' Bankiend, 9sit slb (Bromley) 1 Mr A. Twaddle's Crossguard 10.6 (Donovan) 2 Mr Alex. Twaddle's Pea Jacket, 9.0 (Kirk) 3 Also ran—Silver Cross (10.0), lsla (9.0). Crossguard lead till half-way, and then Bankend got into the lead and ranjiome the winnor by a length or two. Time, lmin 23 l-sth sees.
