Inch Clutha.
+ (From Our Own Correspondent.) Since the New Year we have had a dry spell of weather, but grass has \ not been mak;ng much headway. Thinning and sowing turnips has been the order of the day. A good many farmers have had to sow a second time, and some even a third time, and in some cases harrowed down the drill and sowed grass. The reason in some cases being the fly, and others blamed bad seed. Some of the early sown < turnips are looking very well, but I doubt there will be a scarcity this winter. On Tuesday night we had a very heavy hail storm, which wrought havoc with some of the fields ; it will keep them back for a considerable time, in fact, it is very questionable if they will be the same again. Tub hail passed along one side and bottom of the Island while on the other side it rained. It seeme I rather strange that one farmer should have had hail and his neighbour over the fence have rain. [ see Mr John Mosley is busy harvesting an heavv crop of grass-seed. If the' weather keeps up till he gets it slacked in good order, lam sure ho will have a big yield. s The blight is playing up with the potatoes. I don't think many have escaped it. It is very discouraging to see some splendid, crops ruined by the disease. Some of the wheat and oat crops are looking fairly well, but 1 hear some >iompiaints (hat the hail storm had knocked out a lot of the oats in some paddocks. It is too soon yet to say when there will be any grain-cutting done down here yet. The school picnic was held this year on the sandpit, when there was a largo gathering of young and old. Messrs Rutherford and Kenton kindlylent their boats for the occasion, and the whole party were landed safely over the river, where everyone seemed (<> enjoy themselves on f-'ie seashore running races and indulging in all wrts of games they fancied, and all returned home well pleised with the day's outing.
