Waiwera.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

Farm work is being carried steadily forward here. The weather has been exceptionally fine lately, and the groand has not become too wet for ploughing. Sheep on turnips are doing well, but the crops in some cases are not standing a great deal of eating, and there will not be so much surplus for sale as usual. Messrs Steadman and How list on who have taken up the threshing and chaffcutting run formerly held by Mr Broad havo lately gone round with their chaff-cutter. A quantity has been cut for sale, but a great bulk is still in the stack, being apparently held for an improvement in prices.

Since writing to you last our township has been improved by the addition of two buildings—one a dwellinghouso owned by Mr Ryder, and one a shop and house combined owned by Mr Power. Mr J as. Spiers has lately completed a substantial farm dwelling house on a terrace over looking the river, and Mr S. Turner has the timber on the ground for a residence on his land which he purchased some time back from the Kuriwao Estate. You will doubtless have received a report of the fire which occurred here on Tuesday morning, when the store and post office, occupied by Mr Weavers was totally destroyed. Practically nothing was saved as the lire on being.discovered at half-past three had so strong a hold that no help was available in time to save anything. Mr Roseveare of this district had taken over the business and property and was to havo entered into possession on Saturday. The building was insured, I understand, for £2OO. It was the first house built in the township, being erected by the late Mr Clnsholm 27 years ago, but it had since been added to.

You already chronicle the sale by Mr Thos. Blacklock of his farm of 515 acres to Messrs Anderson Bros., of Carol Station. The farm lies well to the estate, as it adjoins it on two sides. It comprises several early selections, and has been highly improved, Mr Blacklock having spent considerable sums on fencing, draining, liming, and building. Messrs Anderson are to be congratulated on securing such a convenient and workable property. A person engaged in flax-milling in the south was recently in the district inspecting with a view to obtaining all availablo flax for removal or else erecting a milling plant and working the material on the ground. Owing to the removal, or intended removal of four families from the dis-; trict, 1 understand there is a danger

'of tho school committee losing the assistant teacher, - . The bridge over the Waiwrra at Robs' i» noaring oojnpletio'n. This will be a great advantage over the present round-about way through the ford. There is no doubt that this is the least expensive way of overcoming the difficulties connected with that place. The Waiwera Church congregation has introduced the heating of the church by kerosene stoves. A proposal was received to have an acetylene gas system installed, but as the regular services are held in the day time, tho kerosene heaters are considered the most suitable.
