I (Prom Our Own Correspondent.) A considerable amount of interest ■ centres round the departmental inquiry , that is being held in this district and i Tahakopa. Quite ■ a number of . witnesses were in evidence, hut so far i as I can learn the matter is purely de- ! partmental. I Tho Owaka Presbyterian Church 11. I _ The Owaka cricketers are only play,* | ing in the junior grade this season 1 as ,so many matches are played outside i Owaka there is a difficulty in getting a team, it being not always convenient for players to get away or for a first eleven to have sufficient practice to compete with any chance of success with clubs more favourably situated. However, as juniors tuc Owaka club should make a name for themselves 1 provided they practice. Major Stewart inspects the Owaka Rifles to-morrow evening. As this is the Major's first inspection all members should make a point of being present. The annual competition for the shield takes place at Balclu'tha on the 4th November. Last competition Owaka were only two points behind the winners, but they have not had much practice this season. There are a number of promising young shots in the corps, who, with practice, will develop into top-notchers. This is one of the,,most backward seasons that we have' experienced for years- Usually at this time ihe grass is well advanced, but feeding on turnips is still necessary, tfith tlinv «i'O are fortunate enough to possess them.
