LETTER FROM TROOPER G. ARNOLD.
" Middleburg, September 3 1900:— We are marching on to the front to join forces with General French at Waterval fontein, about 80 miles from here. The Boers are supposed to make the last stand at | Barberfcon, about 35 miles south west of the Portuguese frontier. Before this reaches you I hope the war will be a thing o't the past. I did not, like the Police, so I left it and went back to my regiment. The Police was an easy enough billet bufc ifc was too slow so I 'jacked' it.— Later : We are now under Brigadier General Mahon. He is a fine man. It was his column relieved Mafeking. By jove it is a surprise to anyone who has never seen a column moving, or going into action. We came to a fine house one day, and in ten minutes it was on the ground for firewood."— Extract from a leyter from Trooper George Arnold to his brother Mr Jas. Arnold, Hillend.
