The Boers under Cronje are confine! in a spot in the river bed two miles long, 150 ft wide and 50ft depp. General Chernside's brigade holds the upper end of the di'ch. Colonel SmithDorrien's force occupies the. lower end. High banks and numerous dongas afford the enemy some shel'er. Their food supplies are abundant but their ammunition is failing.
