RATANUI.
[Fr.oai Oub Own Cokrespondknt,
Since my last the weather has been very rough and wef, but now we have 0 change in the dry sunny days of the last week when a good deal of work in the grass-seed line has been done.
J am sorry lo repoifc an accident which occurred to Mr Davis, our snhool teacher, on Saturday, the 17 h inst, when I c was thrown from a youn» horse which reared and kicked him on the chest, but luckily with only slight injury. A rotten stirrup was the cause of the accident.
On Saturday nigh*-, the 17 h inst., patriotic concert was held in the school. The building was crowded, and the concert was the most successful ever held in the district. Patriotic speeches, songs, and recitations were the order of the evening, and whrn the hat was passed round it was rewarded with the sum of L 22s GJ, which goes towards the more horse fund to equip our local volunteer — Mr John Moir — who is now in camp. . A dance was held in the school on the IGih Feb. to taise funds for the picnic coming off shortly, but owinjj to the scarcity of young men in the district, the attendance was not big. The news of the relief of Kimberley and Ladysmith was hailed with great enthusiasm, but the disaster which befel the Victorians has quite cast a gloom on the community. Feb 25th.
