THE FOURTH CONTINGENT.

The Chinese residents of Dunedin are not behind hand in contributing a share of the cost of the contingent, and have raised L25 2s 6d for a horse, which they desire to be called " Canton."

The Auckland portion of the contingent will have a send-off from the northern city on Monday first. Auckland's contribution will consist of three officers— viz., Lieutenant Walker, Captain Abbott and Lieutenant Thomson — and 80 men.

The eight Nelson men who have been selected for the fourth contingent were accorded a most enthusiastic send-off on Wednesday morning on their departure for the Dunedin camp.

Wellington has sufficient money in hand to send 78 men.

On Wednesday morning the Premier wired to the Dunedin committee:--" The chartering of the boat was completed yesterday. She should be in the eclonyin about 10 days. I think she ought to be in Dunedin between the 17th and the 20th March. In any case your committee should be prepared to fit in with those dates."

The maids of Dunedin have not only given a horse for the use of a member of the Fourth Contingent, but have also handed in Lll towards the trooper's equipment.

Liberal contributions of horses and money continue to flow in.

The Floral tFete held on Forbury Park, Dunedin, on Wednesday, was an immense success, the attendance being about 15,000, probably the largest at any such outdoor gathering in the colony. It is estimated that as the financial result LllO will be handed over to the Contingent Committee.

Nothing authoritative is yet known as to who is to be commander of the Fourth Contingent or of the Otago troop. Ife is considered highly probable, however, that at any rate the command of the latter will fall on either Captain Harvey or Lieutenant Fulton. — Daily Times.
