SCOUTS CONTINGENT.

The horse " Balclutha" was forwarded to Dunedin on Wednesday, and was forwarded on to ChristchuTch next day for shipment by the Knight Templar from Lyttelton on Saturday as a remount for the Clutha men under Major Robin.

Work has started at the Forbnry camp in earnest. Yesterday 75 men were under canvass. Owing to the number applying, the tests are very severe, and we hear of one man who was sent back as he was a quarter of an inch short of the minimum round the chest.

Yesterday Messrs W. Telford and J. A. Anderson were in Balclutha fixing np in regard to sending three nun. from the Wuwera. They will horse and equip Troopar Clark and Clias.B. Burgess, both of Balclutha, as well as a resident of Waiwera.

Taking the Clutha district from Wai pa hi to Balclutha we believe a dozen men will be horsed and equipped. If this end of the Bruce County be included, the number will be about 20. So far as we can ascertain, every man now volunteering is now provided for. The men are very anxious to get away, and there are some complaints as to the delay and want of information. Two men and horses have already gone forward at their own expense.

The number of horses already donated or promised totals about 225. Considering that this is much in excess of the number required, and that mors are still coming in, we thjnk the organising committee should seriously consider the advisability of increasing the Ofcago quota to 150 men.

Following avo, approximately, details of the men who have already applied :— CI*S3 A. — Men with horse and L 25 for equip' ment, 78; Class B.— Men with horse only, 146 ; Class B.— Men only, '215. B. and C lists are closed.

There will be a drill of the Clutha Mounted Rifles this evening at 7 p.m., at which the horse raised by the ladies will be pr suited to Captain Harvey. A "farewell" to Captain Harvey and the Clutha Volunteers will be held iv the Crown Hotel after the concert this evening. The presentation of the horse will take place in the vicinity of the Colonial Bank.

Messrs Jas. and Win. Willocks have handed the Mayor L 25 to purchase a mount for Sydney Smith.
