PAPATOWAI.

*> [Froii Our Own Correspondent.] We are now having some real summer weather and the roads are feeling the influence of the drying winds which have prevailed for the past few days. After a long time of weary waiting the most of the State farm settlers have got a start on the roadworks, and it is to be hoped they will be kept going for some time. I hope that our member, Mr T: omsor, will us**; his influence to try and get as much as he can for this part of the district as the settlers here will hnve'an uphill fight for a number of years. If works were prosecuted as they should be, which has not been c.ise in this particular region, there woulcl be a show for the settlers to do without Government aid in a yeir or two, as they would be able to go in for the dairying industry, when they are able to keep the requisite member of cattle to make a living. A social and dance was held in the Kahuika, M'Lennan River schoolhouse on the night of the 19:h inst. Considering the wet weather we had previous to the affair a goodly number rolled up. A Ipngthy programme of songs varied with readings and recitations, with flute and cornet solos was gone through, and each individual was heartily applauded for his or her exertion to please the audience. After the concert part was over refreshments were handed round and then the floor was cleared for a trip on the light fantastic, which was kept up till , daylight. The committee are to be comp'emented on the manner in which they discharged tlrir duties. Af'er the customary votes of thanks had been given the company joined in singing Auld Ling Syne, after which each and all wended their way to their respective homos, highly pleased with their night's outing.
