Mr Chamberlain, in reply to a question in the House of Commons, said that it was not intended to hold the Imperial conference when the colonial Premiers were in London, but the Government would take an opportunity to discuss matters of common interest. The past week's mortality of the bubonic plague in Bombay has largoly diminished. An explosion in Nobel's dynamite works, at Stovenston, Ayrshire, killed six persons. Lady Wallace, widow of the late Sir Richard Wallace, has bequeathed to the nation Hertford House, Manchester square, together with the valuable collection o£ pictures and works of art, which are valued at over a million sterling. The bequest is made conditionally on the Government erecting a building for these. Sir J. Gordon Sprigg, Premier of Cape Colony, states that 2000 Bechunas at Landber are disloyal if not actually rebels. Sir Blundell Maple, M.P,, for Dulwich, has donated LIOO,OOO to rebuild the hospital in connection with the university cellege in Gower street. The English wheat market "is quiat and inclined to weakness. The Continental is declining and the American declining and weak. Californian No. 1 milling, 34s 3d ; Russian, 31s 6d. The London quotation for No. 1 hard Duluth is 34s 6d. Frozen meat and hemp are unchanged. Butter is very flat ; colonial 94s to 963 per cwt ; Danish is down to 90s. Cheese has slower sale - — New Zealand, 575. Frozen rabbits are unsaleable — English selling at 6d. News from the Phillippinea states that the insurgents attacked the Spanish barracks at Manila and killed the commander and a number of officers. The troops fought bravely, but many were killed. A majority of the committee appointed in March, 1896, to consider whether women should be made admissible to Cambridge University reported in favor of degrees being granted to women on similar conditions to men. Japan has decided to adopt a gold standard.
