TOKOMAIRIRO.
r* [From Our Own Correspondent] Many are very much pertubod in spirit to know the reason why Mr Crawford Anderson has withdrawn — as everyone alleges but no one speaks with authority, from the Bruce election. He walked the asphalt in Milton on several consecutive "sale clays" with all the prestige of a foeman worthy of Mr Allan's steel. Then suddenly, -hey, presto ! Now you see him and now you don't ! What scared him is a poser. It could not be any hostility shown him, surely. Why I saw him " with my own mouth " (historic " bull " of last Bruce election — glorious tight on then) apparently quita gracious Wi' mony favours, sweet and precious with strong, not to say red-hot Allen men. Wherefore, then, did he fall in with this puncture of the bladder, to use a cycling phrase, that has cut short his trial spin and thus leave the race a walk over, for 100 to 1 this is now what it will amount to. The County Council triennial elections j is ..creating unusual interest, it is said, I amontr the ratepayers, especially in the J Crichton riding:, where a considerable way into a policy " question " is at issue. There is nothing current, so far, as to opposition to the sitting member, but the ratepayers will keenly follow the leaning of the would-be member on the question referred to i c. , roughly, who is to pay the piper in the recent Lake Drainage Supreme Court cases. A sly-grog selling case against a storekeeper at Clarksville is to be heard at Milton to-day (Thursday). It will be interesting to watch the process of the police to obtain a conviction as it is said there is nothing in the shape of direct evidence, but that the powers given by certain clauses of the Liquor Act, magesterial descretion is to be largely relied on. The manner of fossicking out such evidence as there is also said to include a wrinkle to be pondered on. This, however, is mere hearsay. Your readers will no doubt be apprised of the result next week. The Clutha is not tho only place you see, where stolen apples are accounted especially sweet.
