. [From Our Own Corbespondent, | The monthly ' meeting : of the ' borough council was held on Wednesday evening, and was attended, by the. mayor (Mr Shore), Messrs M. Carsori, P. Welsh, J.Christie, j. Muir," and T. B; Smith. — H. S. Hitchon wrote requesting that the borough chamber be. connected by telephone.;- deferred till next meeting. — Letters were read from the Bruce County Council, with reference to punt management, and repairs, and legal advice taken, as to the raising of loan , on drainage reserves. — The secretary of the Bracken fund wrote request; ing the councils' aid in raising monetary subscriptions for this fund ; It was decided that a committee consisting of the whole council be formed for the purpose of canvassing the district.— A letter from the late lamplighter containing reflections upon the council and its officers, was rejected upon the unanimous vote of the council. — J. Allen, M.H.R., wrote stating that the council's Creek Vesting Bill was one of many bills, removed from the Order . Paper by> the . Government. — The monthly paysheet of L6l 13s Gel, and miscellaneous accounts for L7O were passed for payment. — Seven tenders were received for. the work of trimming 26 chains of hawthorn , hedge, and A. M. Fahey's tendsr of Is 5d per chain was accepted. — The inspector reported that the estimated cost of gravelling footpath on west side of Salcombe street was L7O ; received. — The clerk intimated that November 15 was' the day fixed for receiving nominations for the office of mayor. — The meeting then closed. The social in connection with the anniver sary services- of the Wesleyan Church was held on Friday evening. The attendance was a very large one, I hear, but being unable to be present, I must apologise for the absence of detailed report. Mr J. Allen, our member, made a brief visit on Friday, his business being in connection with the borough's representation on on River Board; '. During the evening he attended th<? arrnual meeting of the Athletic Club, where his appeurance was the cause of an outburst of prolonged applause. Another walk over seems in store for Mr Allen. The annual meeting of the Athletic Club was held on Friday, evening. The president, Mr Algie, occupied the chair. The balancesheet, which showed a loss upon last gathering, was read ami adopted. The following office-bearers were elected :— President, Mr J. A. Algic ; vice-presidents, Messrs J. Allen, W. M. Shore, Dr Fitzgerald, H. S. Hitchon, J. Christie, D. Carson, J. Nicholson, T. B. | Smith, M. Straw," and W. Aitoheson ; treasurer, Mv G. Penman ; secretary, Mr D. I Clements ; committee of management, Messrs A. Napier, T. Hislop, A, Parlane, R. Penman, Jos. Smith, W. Bradley, and D. Marshall.-^ It was decided to hold the games on Boxing Day". The Rev L. M. Isitt delivered a lecture on prohibition in Smith's Hall on Tuesday evening, when there was an over-crowded attendance, every inch of .space available being filled. The lecturer dealt with the subject in a masterly style, and with the exception of the interruption of an impatient hearer, he received a very attentive hearing. Several songs interspersed the lecture, including that favourite ditto, " Strike out the top l'ne." The Rev Mr Fairrnaid occupied the chair, and several prominent members of the party occupied seats on the platf o,rm_.
