Parliament was prorogued on Saturday afternoon. Mr Thomas Ayson and Mr John Edie advertise places at which they will address the electors. , _ Tbe annual soiree, concert, and dance, in aid of the Waiwera Public Library Funds will be held this evening. . A field trial of Messrs W. Gardiner and Co's. Improved Combined Eidger, Manure and Turnip sower will be held at Mr W. S. Mosley's Inch Clutha, on Wednesday next. The Rev. L. M. Isitt, of prohibition fame, is to preach in the Presbyterian Church both morning and evening on Sunday and to lecture in M'Kenzie's Hall on Monday at 8 o'clock. On Tuesday he is to visit Kaitangata. Mr John Blair will address the electors in M'Kenzie's hall this evening and at the [ Puerua hall to-morrow evening, and elsewhere as advertised. We hope lo see a large attendance at Mr Blair's meeting this evening. It will be seen that Mr Thomson has with? drawn from tbe mayoral election. Mr Thomson was prepared to fight any single opponent but does not believe in a triangular duel, and has therefore retired. The contest between Messrs Stewart and M'Coiiey will be a very keen one. The notices of elections for the Bruce County Council are, advertised in this issue. Mr W. S. Mosley is again a candidate for the Matau riding. Mr Mosley has proved himself an energetic and painstaking councillor, and has we understand not missed a single meeting during the six years he has been in the council The Salvation Army promise a grand and novel display in the barracks here to-morrow evening. This will take the form of the building of a minature or model t?mple in which -16 adults and children will take part, the operation being accompanied by full explanations. When completed the structure will form an illustration of the Christian character. The work will be followed by a tea and cake supper. On Wednesday last a number of the friends of Mr T. Mackenzie M.H.E,, in Dunedin, met at the Otago Club for the purpose of saying farewell to him prior to his departure for the Home country. About one hundred gentlemen were present, the Hon. Mr Fergus presiding. The chairman in a very eulogistic speech proposed Mr Mackenzie's health, and was followed by Messrs Scobie Mackenzie, James Allen M.H.R., and J. A. Millar M.H.E. Mr Mackenzie suitably acknowledged- the toast. The annual social of the . Balclutha Presbyterian Church was held on Wednesday evening when as usual there was a very large attendance. A strong choir rendered excellent service during the evening. The Eev. Mr Gibb delivered his popular lecture on " Vesuvious and Pompeii, or glimpses of a dead world " which proved extremely interesting and called forth loud and continued marks of approbation. The refreshments were abundant and everything passed off most success fully. The church social in connection with St. Mark's congregation was very successful on Friday night, in spite of, the many counter attractions. After a few songs and musical items had been contributed, refreshments were handed round, and, the floor having been cleared, about fifty eGuples enjoyed themselves for two or three hours .in the sociable and highly beneficial amusement of j dancing. The committee desire to express their thanks to those who. helped towards the success of the entertainment by their contributions of music (vocal and instrumental) and by the substantial refeshments provided. The following ladies were successful in passing the examination in connection with the nursing class of the St John's Ambulance Association held by Dr Fleming under, the auspices of the Balelutha Technical classes : — Mrs T. Mackenzie, Mrs Valentine, Mrs D. Stewart, Mrs Bremner, Miss M: Stewart, Miss Sutherland, Miss Wood, Miss M'Adie, Miss U. Bell, Miss Shaw, Miss Grant, Miss Moir. Dr Sutherland, the examiner, reports that " the work of tho following was capital, in order of merit : Mrs Valentine, Miss Wood, Miss ; M'Adie, and Mrs T. Mackenzie." On being opened .all the organs were found -.in .a perfectly healthy condition excepting the stomach which was .very unifih congested, while the intestine leading from. it, just at the exit neck, was literally packed with the bot larvw, hundreds of Ilifim hanging on with the hook^ like claw peculiar, to them. . The mucuous lining of that intestine and also parfc of .the' Btomach appeared to ba fairly riddled with perforations.
