KAITANGATA.
[FflOH OCR OWtf CORnESPONDSINT.] The cold and boisterious weather for the past few days has somewhat retarded both farming and gardening operations, but the coalmines are reaping a harvest thereby, they being all fully employed to meet the increased demand. The Kaitangata Coal Co., through their general manager, Mr W. P. Watson, have made a donation of LlO to the Kaitangata Afchenseum for the express purpose of purchasing books for the library. Local politics are evidently at a discount at present. On Monday only two nominations were received for the three vacancies upon the borough council. This is much to be regretted, for an infusion oit new blood woald no doubt have beneficial effects. The total exclusion of any of our local footballers, from the team of association players who are to represent Ofcago at the interprovincial tournament in Dunedin next week, has caused great dissatisfaction, and not without cause, when one considers the unbroken record of several of our local players, a combined team having twice failed to unplace them as premiers. Enthusiasts are desirous to see the closing match of the season between the present eleven, and the eleven of 1890, with a small charge for admission, proceeds to be devoied to improvements upon the recreation ground. The latest addition to our business fraternity is the opening of a branch, by Messrs J. and J. Arthur, of Dunedin. The regular meeting of the Borough Council was held on Wednesday evening last week and was attended by Messrs W. M. Shore (mayor),J. Christie.T. B. Smith, H. Cornish, M. Carson, P. Welsh, and J.
