At the meeting of the Education Board ou Wednesday an application from Uie Kaitnngafa School Committee, for a lease of section G, block If, Kiversdale township, was declined. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Cludia Literary Society was held in the Waitapekn School on Wednesday evening:. There was a good attendance of metnhcrs, Mr St.pw.irt presiding. The evening v.as devoted to the reading of the journal, which contained thiee excellent essays on " Business," " .Punctuality," and" Beauty," nil of which evoked considerable discus don. A recitation "Buy your own cherries " was givrn by Miss Porteons. About 20 gentlemen assembled in the Criterios Hotel on Wednesday evening for tho purpose of saying good bye to Mr and Mrs Blnckley, and to express their heartiest good wishes towards them on the eve of their flepar. ture for Palmerston. The health of Mr and Mrs Blackley was proposed by Mr Geo. Thomson, who referred to the satisfactory manner in which they had conducted' the Criterion Hotel. He said that Mr and Mrs Blackley were respected by a very wide circle of friends, both in arrl arounii Balcluthn, who entertained oly the kindliest feelings towards them, and whose gool wishes for their future happiness and prosperity would follow them wherever their lot might be cast. Several others also expressed themselves in similar terms. Mr Blackley, in responding said he was very sorry to le,\ve Baltfhitha. During the seven years and six weeks he had been here he had made many friends, and wherever they went both Mrs Blackloy and himself would carry with them the happiest recollections of their sojourn in Balclutha. Had it been left to himself and his wife to decide they would have preferred never to have left B^lclutha but it had been willed otherwise. A number of songcf were rendered during the evening, while r» number of informal toasts were proposed, altogether making a most enjoyable gathering. Quite a large and appreciative audience gathered in Mackenzie's Hall at the usual meeting of the Biilclutlm Literary Society on Friday evening last to hear Professor Black's lecture on " Agricultural Chemistry," with experiments, a report of which we publish on another page. Tho very interesting lecture was delivered in the Professor's usual racy and amusing style, and he was ably assisted by his well-known I assistant " Wully," to whom the Professor | appeals every now and then as an authority for everything "in the heavens above, and the earth beneath, and the waters undur the earth." " Wully " had half-an-hour's lecturing after the Professor was finished, and kept everybody amused with his humourous remarks, especially when he was explaining about the action of bisulphide of carbon in Doisoning rabbits. He seems to divine the inmost souls of the rabbits when the poison begins to act as he explains exactly how they feel, and he finishes up by saying, " but of course you must be sure the mbbits are there before you put the poison in J" i By the wiy, ginger-wine was tested on the platform and found to contain alcohol.— Last Wednesday evening the Literary Society had a musical evening, when a rather short but pleasant programme was gone through. Mrs Valentine, Mr Ferrar, Mr Bray, and Mr Bruce (who on being encored for "Scotland yet" responded with "John Grumbly" in style) contributed songs, and Miss Lawsou a violin solo. Mrs Grigor and Miss Frances Dunne acted as accompanists.— The next meeting takes place on Wednesday evening next, when Professor Salmond will deliver a lecture on the "Stoics and Epicureans." We have no doubt this will prove an interesting lecture, and hope to see a large attendance.
