BALCLUTHA DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.
The ordinary monthly meeting o f above committee was held at the Borough Council JCh ambers on Monday night. JThere were present — Meeara Turnbull (chairman) Paterson, M'Neil, M'Corley, Dunne, M'Donald. Lousley, Hogg, and Pay. Mr Pope forwarded return of attendance for quarter ending June 30. Secretary Board of Education advised payment of quarterly allowance, LlO, into the bank. Circular was received from the board re midwinter holidays. The board returned cheque which had been sent in by the committee for the High School fees and intimated that the money for these fees should be remitted in one sum in the month of December. Mr J. W. Wilson wrote making a complaint against the head master and a reply thereto from the head master was received. The chairman reported that he had authorised the head master to close the school for the midwinter holidays from 29th June to 6th July, inclusive. Mr Hogg proposed, and Mr M'Neil seconded that the head master's reply to Mr Wilson's complaint is satisfactory and that the reply be shown to Mr Wilson on application. — Carried. It was resolved that the clerk pay Mr Pope his share of High School fees up to date of liis leaving the school. Mr Dunne reported that a statement had been circulated by some one which was calculated to discourage applicants from applying for the position of head master of the school, to the effect that five members of the committee had pledged themselves to give the appointment to a certain applicant. Nearly all the members denied that they had given any such pledge. The chairman, the Clerk, and Mr Hogg were appointed a Visiting Committee for the remainder of the year. It was decided to co-operate with the Borough Council in the matter of treeplanting on Arbor Day, should that body take any action ; it being felt that the committee was not in a financial position to do anything by itsslf. It was resolved that the board be requested to allow Mr Pope to remain in charge of the school until such time as his successor be appointed. Accounts amounting to L 36s were passed for payment.
