Clutha County Council.

The monthly meeting of the Clutha County Council was held in the Council Chambers, Balclutha, on Friday. There were present — Messrs W. Hay (chairman), D. Wallace, W. Rhodes, J. Robertson, .J Gumming, W. Dallas, J. R. Mitchell, J. Johnston, and T. Knowles. CORRESPONDENCE. The Waste Lands Board referred Mr Berney's application . for a yearly license for grazing over section 19, block VII, Woodlands, to the council to see wether they had any objections.— -Council had no objections. Mr G. W. Draper, Ratanui, wrote asking the council to hand hi 3 solicitor, Mr Thornton, his summons for arrears of rates. He would plead inability to pay for want of a road to his property, — Received. Mr R. Simmers wrote asking the council to vote LIO to repair road near Waikoikoi Cemetery. —Mr Gumming said he would shortly ascertain whether this road was more in need of attention than any other in the locality, and if so he would, of course, favour its having first attention.— Letter received. The Benevolent Trustees, forwarded an application for relief for the council's consideration. — The Chairman said the man referred to was really in need, but he thought if the case was brought under the notice of his friends, who were well off, it would be attended- to.— Matter referred back to the trustees, with a recommendation to that effect. , Mr R. Dewar wrote asking that his name be removed from the roll in respect of a section at Kelso, which was now part of the river bed, and was not actually in existence. — Name to be removed. Mr James Motion applied for a slaughtering license for section 9, block XIV, Popotunoa. — Granted on usual conditions. The Secretary Benevolent Institution wrote stating that the person at Clinton referred to at last meeting would be readmitted into the institution. When the man left the institution he certainly never said, he was coming back — Mr Wallace explained that the man originally told him that he had exceeded his leave, and therefore would not be readmitted. Subsequently to last meeting of Council, however, the man said he thought that wan the reason. He had now gone back to the institution. FINANCE. An order by the Stipendiary Magistrate for the Dayment of L 8 12s, in respect of Luke O'Neil's contract, to Gilbert Bruco, a workman engaged on the work, was received and to be given effect to. The Finance Committee's report, which recommended the payment of the monthly pay sheet amounting to L 162 12s 9d, was adopted. Moved by Mr Wallace, seconded by Mr Knowles — li That the same travelling expenses be paid to councillors as has been paid during the past three years." — Carried. ROADS AND WORKS. The engineer's report, which was adopted, enumerated the works for which tenders were called, and the progress made on the contracts in hand during the month. — In regard to Mr Wm. Brown's complaint about county workmen removing timber from the Big Mill shed at Owaka, he found on enquiry that four planks had been used for a day and returned. — There had been heavy floods in the creeks and rivers during the month. In consequence the Pomahaka river was flowing over the deck of the upper bridge at Clydevale, and it was possible heavy traffic over it would have to be stopped. A number ef stone crossings on the Rdnga* here road had also been damaged. At one large crossing there he thought it would be advisable to put in a small bridge. — In regard to applications for expenditure of d.p. and p.l. thirds, the working committee had agreed to expend the money accrued in roads passing Ord^Warnock's, Barr's and Harrington's in bush-falling and earth work. The following tenders were accepted : — Contract 562, Reid and Ord 16s pet chain ; contracl 563, P. Kean L 36 ; contract 566. T. Allan 4s per chain. Moved by Mr Mitchell, seconded by Mr Dallas — " That the engineer ordsr timber to be laid on the ground and then call for tenders to strut a bridge on Wash creek.
