Our Dunedin Letter.

(From Our Own' Correspondent.)

The forthcoming struggle regarding the liquor trade lms excited a great deal of interest in Dunedin and suburbs. A strong and wide-spread feeling has been shown in favour of a reduction of licenses and the better control of the traffic. I feel sure the local option vote will show thif to be the case all over the colony, while in some cases " no license " will carry the day. Ido not think that in a single case the vote will be for allowing the present lumber of licenses to continue. But as you will be able to publish results in yoiiK next issue, it is unnecessary for me to^ay more on the subject. The weather for- the past week was really fine, but on Friday afternoon it commenced to rain and on Saturday it continued without ceasing, making things very unpleasant all round and putting "a stop to all out-door amusements, with the exception of the anniversary races at Forbury, which. were gone on with under very adverse circumstances. The attendance was very limited and confined mostly to enthusiastic sportsmen.

The Thursday half-holiday for George street people is now pretty well assured, and trr emphasise the fact a cricket match on Thursday afternoon on the Caledonian ground between teams from Messrs A. and T. Tnglis and the combined drapers was a source of great attraction. It was thought that the former would easily win as they had two well-known cricketers in their club and had already played several matches against various clubs successfully. The Combined men ashamed them, the bowling of H. Fraer and B. Duthie being ioo good, as was the batting of A. Ferguson, W. Fraer and H. Fraer, and they won by eight wickets. The young ladies of the respective teams dispensed afternoon ten, and a very enjoyable outing eventuated, and a return match is now on the iapis.

We are to be very busj in the way of amusements next week — bowling, tennis, cricket and volunteering being very much in evidence. If the weather keeps fine, the different arrangements should be very attractive and enjoyable. The railway people have also provided for cheap excursions to and from Dunedin.

The University Senate have finished proceedings, and evidently got through a lot of useful and necessary business. For the future the capping ceremony with its attendant noisy demonstrations will be a thing of tho past and graduates will receive their diplomas through the po3fc. The Anglican Clergy have also made preparations for Easter week, and services will he held daily in the respective churches. Special arrangements are being made for Good Friday and Ea3ter Sunday.

Bishop Moran is keeping a great deal better in health and is able to enjoy a little outside sunshine.

Tho opening of the tepid swimming baths has. owing to unforseen circumstances, been postponed until Easter Monday. This establishment when in full swing will be a great boon to all at the north end of the town, and the enterprising propiecor should be well patronised.
