The Hon. J. M'Kenzie, Minister of Lands pasted through from Dunediu to lnvercargiU op Wedneaday, He returns to«moftw,
Messrs Neil and Co. have received a cup valued five guineas from The Sunlight Soap Co., which they Jhave presented to the Cluth a Cycling Club through the vice-president Mr M. Coghlan to be completed for within, two months.
A deputation waited on the Rev. Mr Kilpatrick, Ware pa, <m Saturday last and in the name of Ihe congregation presented him with a hor»e,U nggy, and harness. The valuable and appropriate gift was suitably acknowledged by the recipient.
The Oddfellows delegated were entertained at a supper in the CrovMt— fimel ou Saturday evening, by the Loyal Dalton Lodg<\ Bro. J. Hogg presided aud a very enjoyable evening was spent and ample justice done to the excellent spread provided by Host and Hostess Coghian. During the evemug Bro. Sligo was presented with a handsome piauo by the members of the order in the Otago District.
M'Kenzie's Hall was well filled on Monday night, when Mr Jago from Dunedio delivered an able and eloquent address on the temperance question. The Rev. Mr Kilpatrick also addressed the meeting in his usual racy and populai style. Mi James Hogg presided. Ou '•lie motion of Rev. Mr Currie a hearty vote ot thanks was passed to the speakers. On Tuesday evening a temperance meeting was held in the Salvation Army Hall, when addresses were delivered by Rev. Mr Currie and Messrs liamage and C. R. Smith. Mr James Hogg occupied the chair. Tenders were called for last meeting of the Bruce County Council for a considerable number of small contracts in connection with the Matau and Inch Clutha drainage works, the amount to be spent bring from LSOO to L7OO. Strange enough not a single, tender whs received. And yet miuisters are being almost daily importuned to find work for the unemployed and save their wives and families from starvation. There must be something wrong somewhere. Fresh tenders are now called for these w^rks, and we would point out that they are peculiarly adapted for men without means, as no plant beyond (lie ordiuary spade or shovel is required in executing the work.
We wish to mention for the benefit of those interested that Mr J. Bryant, monumental ma»on and headstone and monumental engraver, decors) tor, and renovator is now in Balclutha engaged relettering and renovating a number of headstones in the cemetery here. Anyone can see that a largo number of these have long been much in want of attention, and as such au opportunity is but seldom presented ; it is to be hoped many will take advantage of Mr Bryant's visit to have these monuments put; into a more decent condition. We understand Mr Bryant will also be engaged in similar work in cemeteries throughout the surrounding districts, so that those who require his services sliouM now attend to the matter.
