The Condition of the CROPS.

The crops throughout the Clutha district generally are this year quite up to the average, and in many instances above it. The harvest generally will be rather later than last year, a fact due to the somewhat backward summer we have had. Had the winter been a wet one, and the farmer been unable to get their crops in in good time, the harvest would have been a very late one. On ridgy land especially the crops are exception ably good, better, indeed, than they have ever been before, but on the low lands they are on the heavy side — too much straw. Harvest operations will not be general for 10 days yet, though Mr W. Griffith cut a small patch of oats early last week, and we have heard of one or two others who have since done the same. Amongst the wheat crops the best we have seen belongs to Mr John Findlay, of Urydale, who has 80 acres of magnificent wheat, the varieties being Tuscan, red straw, and velvet. The storm at the beginning of the week has laid it over considerably, but it not expected to interfere with the yield, though it will be more difficult to handle. Mr John Shaw has also a good crop of wheat. Mr W. Griffith has also a capital crop, and pretty early. Further down the river Mr Sutherland and Messrs Taylor Bros, have promises of good yields. The oat crops are quite up to the average all over. The crops all over presented a somewhat disheartening appearance on Monday, but we do not think the result will be nearly so bad as what was then anticipated.
