BALCLUTHA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
.; , ♦ The ordinary monthly meeting, of the above council was held on Tuesday evening. : There were present— the mayor (Mr Thomson) and Messrs M'Corley, Wilson, Hutchins, Ramage, Bell, Wright, and Mason. John Finn wrote asking for a second progress payment on his lamp-lighting contract. — Granted. Other accounts, amounting to L 22 4s 6d, were also passed for payment. The, Mayor reported on behalf of tho works committee that several loads of rotten rock had been laid on one or two crossings where it waa badly required ; and that the committee. had had the tree referred to at last meeting removed ; also that several' of the streets which were getting low in the middle had been gravelled as directed at last meeting. Mr Mason asked if that was all the gravel that was intended to be laid on these streets.- He thought it was a pity a little more had not been put on when they were at it. Mr M'Corley expressed a similar opinion. The Mayor said ho understood that the instruction of the council was that only a little was to be laid along tho middle of the streets and fill in the hollows. Mr Ramage said it was only the hollows that were to be filled. The Mayor remarked he thought there was enough on to last the winter out. The Mayor reported that the committee appointed at last meeting had waited on Mr Harvey re the railway to the quarry. Mr Harvey was willing to renew the lease provided the conditions as to fencing were carried out. After some discussion, in the course of which councillors generally expressed the opinion that on no account should the rails be removed, it was agreed to write Mr Ussher drawing his attention to the stipulation re fencing, and the Mayor said he would make it his business to call and sj e Mr Ussher in the course of a day or two. The general and library rates, notices of which had been given at last meeting, were confirmed. On the suggestion of Mr Wright, it was agreed to get the dayman to lower the pump in Renfrew street a few feet, as it was not drawing water at present. %/%1x Mason drew attention to the bad state of the footpath in Clyde street from the Presbyterian Church to near the Wealeyan Church. — The Mayor said he would get the dayman to attend to the matter. A small culvert, &c. in East Ward, referred to by Mr Bell, was aldO authorised to be attended to by the dayman. This was all the business, and the council then proceeded to consider matters in connection with the library.
