LAWRENCE.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

The Waitahuna Agricultural Show, held on the 30th, was well attended by local residents, and visitors even, too, went from Lawrence, and all enjoyed the outing. The number of exhibits was large, and, on the whole, it was the most successful gathering the Club has had since their initiation.- The Waitahuna Fife and Drum Band enlivened the proceedings dnring the day, and added to the enjoyment of those assembled.

The advisability of establishing a dairy factory in the Waitahuna district will be discussed at the next meeting of the' Farmers' Club, Mr R. Craig (ex-presi-dent) having given notice that he will move in that direction.

. A fire occurred last week on run 106, Waitahnna West, whereby a settler named William Jamieson lost his dwelling-house and contents, . also some produce which was near the building. The estimated damage is about L2OO, and he was insured in the Standard Company for LIOO.

The Tuapeka Caledonian Society's gathering on the Lawrence Recreation Ground on the 28th was a great success. Over 100 persons were present, and the day being a very fine one, everybody enjoyed themselves. The Industrial School Band played a number of lively tunes during the day, which assisted to increase the pleasure of those in attendance. For the foot races the entries were large, and each event was closely contested. Mr C. A. ,S track,, who, I understand, comes. from your direction, was the most successful prize-taker at the ruuning. In addition to the sports usual on these occasions, several horse races took place, and for both the Hack and Trotting eventa — prizes, L 5 for the first and 30.3 for the second horse — there were six entries, and a good deal of interest was taken in the results. In the Hospital race a young lad named T. Lynch wa3 thrown, and badly hurt, bub he is -getting on vei-y well at the Tnapeka Hospital, where he was taken to, that institution being about 300 yards from the ground. A very enjoyable concert and danco in the evening finished the proceedings.

The approximated cost of the main* tenance of the Tuapeka Hospital for the present year is about L2OOO, half of which will be borne by Government subsidy, and the balance will be paid by the Tuapeka County Council and the Borough Councils of Lawrence, Tapanui, and Roxburgh, which will have to contribute L 913, LBS, L 23, and LlB, respectively. In addition to these amounts, the local bodies mentioned, will have to contribute to the Charitable Aid Fund of Otago.

Over L2OO was subscribed for the relief of the widow and family of the late (t. Adams, teacher, Beaumont. Mnxsrs M. Fraer, J. Stenhouse, and R. Noill are acting as trustees in the administration of the fund.

The Mataura School Committee have selected Miss L. E. Fowler, of our District High School, as their mistress, and I understand from Mr Stenhouse that the choice is a very good one, as sho is a very capable teacher, and during her last year of service as a pupil teacher sh<) had full charge of the IV". Standard, and passed over 90 per cent.

It is reported here that Mr J. 0. Brown, M. H.R. , will succeed one of the old members on the Land Board, but it is not yet known which one will be left out.

The fire at Heuon's Stables, Toviot, did damage to the amount of LIOOO. Fifteen hftrses were destroyed, and a lot of harness and other things. Ton of the horses belonged to Craig and Co., who lose about L3OO. The building was insured, but only to a limited extent. The origin of the fire is not known.
